Hi All,

How strong are the standard tow points on a 2005 Patrol, the one at the back looks strong. Are they any good for pulling you out of the mud?

Thanks

Scott

Some people wont help you (snatch you) if you dont have rated hooks attached appropriately to the chassis .

Hi Scott

Dont use them for snaching it will brake and go straight through the windscreen of the vehicle you are pulling out. the tow points are strong enough for towing on the road or tyeing the vehicle down on the back of a truck. I have seen both front and rear broken when used as snatch points.

No they aren't.

Rated Recovery points only , or , bare minimum , the Haymen Reese style towbar with the box section.

The front one, although not rated, is a proper cast iron hook attached to the chassis and its quiet strong, but the attachments do not go through the chassis, they just bolt to the bottom of the rail
The rear I would not use other than to hung your tea bag after a cuppa....

The older (pre 2000) models and also GQs front hook was solid steel, properly attached to the chassis with a tubed through the rail fitting which makes it very strong.

Hi Snailbait,

I think we are talking about the same thing. On my defender all i did was drill holes in the chassis and attach the jate ring which is rated if you buy a good one. But the know how for the patrol is pretty poor in the UK so i was wondering if the same solution would work. If this is not the right way to do it, can you post a link to one of the recommended rated recovery points. Hope this does not sound too stupid.

Thanks

Scott

HI Scott
rated recovert points averry easy to obtain most 4WD stockest have rated reacovery points these are rated at 10000 LBS with High Tensile steel bolts
"Bushranger brand" is one that comes to mind this is in the shape of a hook with a retainer spring to hold a bridal you should habe Two recover points on the front then you fit a bridal that conects to the both recovery points
the bridal can be a tree trunck protecter
then thread the snatch strap eye through bridal and connect the tree trunck protecter eyes to the recovery points on the front
now where do you attache the recovery points to
well i only know this for a Defender i dont know for other brands
On the Defender the later ones came with a winch bar gueine (sorry for the spe;lling ) ie LANDROVER BRAND
on each side attached to the chasis the bar is made uo of two plates and they stand verticle from the chasis these are welded to the horisontal part of the bar i call the bumper
now you must i say must have a supporting plate of about 12 mm thich and as large as you can place the wider the better under the recovery point ie hook is attached to it is placed under the horizontil bumperbare plate this sandwich the recover point between the two
also make sure the bolts attaching the bar to the chasis are high tenscile not commerchel grade boltes 80 grade or 8.0 shown on the head of the bolt
WARNING do not use a steel shackel to link the snatch strap together
now for the rear
a tow bar holder of the type heavy duty of the max capicty of the vehicle which has a square hole that holds the tow bar ball (do not use the tow ball ) use the pin to attache the snatch strap

Also if you join a 4WD Club you can get expert advise and enjoy your 4wd
