Hi, I have a Landcruiser 105 with the H151 5 speed manual and it a bit stiff on the changes in the mornings for the first few km's.
I'm giving it service over Xmas and was wondering if anyone knew of a suitable gearbox oil that would improve its cold shifting characteristics?
Ideally something easy to obtain would be better.
Cheers

Hi, I always use Castrol VMX80 this makes the cold running great and also quietens the box.

Any good gearbox/diff oil will be ok in reason, i add some NulonG70 (I thinkk thats what it is called) to the box when changing the oil helps heaps. Buy it at repco or Supercheap auto.

G'day
A suitable full synthetic gearbox oil will do wonders for the cold shifting particularly second gear. I would also suggest full synthetics in the transfer case as
well.

Go with Synforce All Terrain 80. It was developed for the poor cold shift 4wd box.
Use it in my 80 series box - should be same as yours, made a great difference to
mine. Was a pig to shift 1st - 2nd cold - now greatly improved.
Look up Synforce on the net, they're factory is in Hervey Bay QLD, they have distributers everywhere.

Valvoline Dura Gear HD synthetic 75W90 . Use in both gearbox & transfere case. Yes, it is expensive but the results are worth it.

The correct fluid in which Toyota use is
Mobil Fluid 424.
The equivalent in
Caltex is Textran.
You need to use a gear oil which isn't an EP (Extreme Pressure) oil. This is what makes them hard to shift.
Put this in the gearbox and normal 75w/90 in the Transfer Case and you will be very happy with the shifting.
Hope this helps

I forgot to add that I wouldn't use a Synthetic oil as I think it is a bit too good for gearbox's.
I have had experiences with it glazing up synchro rings but by the sounds of it many have had good experience with it.

G'day V8Diesel
Seems like everyone's got their favorite oil, I'll add my two cents worth as
well.
Mobil 424 changed my gearbox from being stiff and notchy into a very smooth changing gearbox, I would highly recomend it.
