Go for the 1985 model 3.9l Isuzu diesel 4 speed box. best ever built. 4WD monthly did a write up on them Jan 2003. Expect to pay more than what they suggest for a goosd one.

Marty
Depends on how much you want to spend.

As Brian stated an Isuzu powered Landy is a great option.
They use an Isuzu 4BD1 engine, which is a big heavy slow revving truck engine, not a car engine, with 4sp box and constant 4WD Tcase as per the Range Rover.
The military Perentie Landy uses basically the same engine box combo with a few mods and a custom built coil chassis similar to the 110.

I haven't seen the 4WD Monthly write up but if it's a 110 (ie coil spring) expect to pay big bucks, if you can find one.
I have an 84 Isuzu Landy and it's been fantastic.
Mine is a leaf spring version, ( called a Stage 1 which is an updated Series 3), a bit cheaper to purchase and has the same engine gearbox Tcase.
It has a huge amount of usable torque and returns around 10km/l.
I have had no problems with the vehicle at all but by all accounts an engine rebuild is a big budget job.
The engine vibration does make for a pretty noisey vehicle, but old Landys aren't the most confortable of vehicles.

A step down in price will get a 3.5l V8 Landy, Stage 1 or 110, again constant 4WD etc, a nice vehicle and well priced. A little heavy on fuel though.

Finally for a cheap runaround you can get the earlier Series vehicles, ex military etc.
A lot have engine conversions to holden red etc.
The main thing to look for there is a salsbury type rear axle, as the Rover diffs did tend to break axles.

Early Landrovers are " unspoilt by modern conveniences"

Good Luck
Ken

I agree with the above posts, the Isuzu powered 110 or Stage I were great trucks, only thing is I heard a rumour recently that Isuzu have stopped supporting this engine so parts may become hard to find.
