I have noticed alot of people replacing the standard winch cable hook for the rated lifting type or using rated d shackles.

Is this a trend or have they been known to snap?
Or would the cable go before the hook?
Mine indicates it is forged but no rateing info.

I only ever used a hook once, and switched over to shackles. It fell off at the most inopportune moment.

A lot of 4wd clubs advise and expect members to use rated recovery equipment.
This is brought about by the possibility of legal claims that may arise from recoveries going wrong and the clubs or members being seen to have been responsible.
The use of non rated equipment might be used as an excuse not to settle a claim in this type of situation.

Kev.
Safety is the reason. you want the winch to stay connected if your vehicle lurches and the cable becomes slack momentarily. Eric.
