Considering the purchase of a pair of Uniden UH-060SX 1.5 watt hand held UHF radios. Anyone had any real experience with them compared with say the 1 watt model UH-041P Is the extra money (for the .5 watt) worth it performance wise? I am planning to use them when on foot in the bush (prospecting) - person to person (probably no more than a couple of k's), when travelling, car to car, also when reversing the van into tight spots etc etc Or if any experts out there have any better suggestions re make/model etc (within a reasonable price range) I'd be interested in hearing from you.

Cheers

Dont know if it is any help, but I just bought a : GME Electrophone TX610 H/Held UHF, new, on Ebay for $51.50 plus postage.
This is 1 watt.
You might find other bargains like this. the seller had 2 for sale.

Hi. We have the 1 watt ones. They suit our needs, which we use the same as you say how you will be using them . We also use them at shows and shopping centres
when we get parted, saves on mobile phone calls. We have tested them in open
country to about 4kms. Hope this helps Brian

I wouldnt think the extra .5 watt would make much difference at all, its more the antenna design and characteristics that make the difference, check the antenna dB and see what the diff is, have a .5 watt and a 5 watt and theres not a lot of difference.

I had a pair of the UH041s until I drowned one of them : (

For what you say you will use them for they are perfect. I often lend one to friends who don't have a car mounted UHF and the range for car to car is good, the rechargeable battery pack last for ages too which is a bonus.

I've been using the 0.5watt UH040 like Brian has in the photo for a few years - they work great. The bought a pair of the smaller UH036, and they are crappy by comparison - batteries (AAA) go flat very quickly.

I'd be getting one that takes AAs every time. Not sure about the 1.5 watt.

Cheers
