What are good camps within 2 hrs (or so) of Brisbane to take a few visiting teens?

Want fresh water swimming holes. Toilets. Showers. Mozzie/ midge free, or few of.

Want to avoid crowds - hard at this time of year. Would consider a private park.

Was at Bigriggen last weekend, the swimming hole is a bit muddy/murky due to the recent rains, though the owner tells me quite safe, just doesn't look the picture. Rest of the park has everything you want and is a great spot with plenty of room.

Better double check on Manar, I'm not sure if it's still open. The owners wife passed away a couple of years ago and he was going to close up, not sure if he did or not, some-one that's been there lately might be able to correct me.

If ya wanna come "up the hill", there's a very well-presented (free) camping area beside a nice lagoon on Oakey Creek at "Bowenville reserve" a few k's sth. of Bowenville between Toowoomba & Dalby.... with the recent rain, the lagoon would have had a good "flush"....
Campground is maintained by (Jondaryan??) shire.... popular swimmin' hole w/- the local young-uns, flushing toilets (o'head tank is topped up regularly by the shire), not sure 'bout showers, but most folk rig up a portable shower anyway....
Didn't notice any mozzies/midges when I was there last....

Lagoon is home to a healthy population of shrimp, yabbies, eel-tail catfish & yellowbelly (and turtles!!!) to name a few... Though I've not caught any here myself, I believe there's a very good chance of hookin' a (Murray) cod or 2 as well... So if ya like fishin'..................... (a small "tinnie" would be handy too, if ya got one)....

Pretty popular spot, but I've been there on an Easter weekend, & there was plenty of room... mid-week should be fairly quiet, I would think.... Well worth a look, IMO....

Is there drinking water?

ev,
not sure if the water in the tank is potable.. I *assume* it is "town water", but it may not be......... I've never bothered to check as SWMBO & I always take drinking water from home, a good policy IMO....

Another spot worthy of consideration up this way is Yarramalong weir on the Condamine R. a few K's south of Pampas, between Pittsworth & Millmerran.... same deal, flushing toilets, no showers, & you'd need to bring drinking water.... last time I was out that way, showers could be had at the servo at Pampas ($2.00, from memory)....
Definitely cod in this one, as I've seen 'em pulled outa there, though there's a No Fishing zone for 200 mtrs (I think) immediately below the weir.... good deep hole a bit further downstream:-))...

From the replies so far, looks like ya got plenty of options, anyway.....
Have fun!!

Lands End is just that ,the furtherest site away from everybody else ,and no passing cars or people ,though the deer and emu always come to have a stickybeak.

Hi EV - some sites worth a look are :

1. Double island Point - for the beach. Bit hot in summer - but great for teens.
If 4Wd - camp on the beach, or freshwater campsite run by rangers.
If not 4wd, either Rainbow Beach camp ground (but 4 hrs drive), or
North Shore Wilderness Camp ground Tewantin (2 Hrs) - 0754497955
right on the beach.

2. Clarence River Wilderness - http://www.clarenceriver.com/
If you have a 4WD (or softroader AWD), this is an absolute gem.
About 3-4 hours, but well worth the drive - score 9 out of 10.
Swimming; canoes; tracks; This is our pick, after 20 years camping.

3. Charlie Morland is also good : Swimming; tracks; wild life.
http://olt.qut.edu.au/udf/QUT-CLIFFHANGERS/gen/static/State_Forest_Info/kenilworth_forestwalks.pdf
Peach Trees is also in the same area - along Sunday Creek Road.
(near the Jimna Fire Tower). Not much for teeenagers though.
https://olt.qut.edu.au/udf/QUT-CLIFFHANGERS/gen/static/State_Forest_Info/jimna_stateforest.pdf

4. As above - Goomburra Forest camp ground. Good for young children.
Same road - Gordons Country - camp anywhere on 4000 acres.
Over Cunninghams Gap - turn right at the Driver Reviver.

5. Neurum Creek Bush Retreat - www.ncbr.com.au
12 minutes from Woodford.;127 Hectare property; aprox 60 camp sites.

6. Paradise Valley - 02 6636 6140. More suited to the nature lover though.
Take the lyons road from Rathdowney;
After you cross the NSW border it is 9 klms on LHS.

7. Armstrong Creek : Not been there but looks good. http://www.aroundoz.com/a_campsite_archive/armstrong_creek.htm

8. Lake Cressbrook near crows nest sounds interesting.

9. Queen Mary Falls - kiosk has a camp ground. Waterfalls; Tracks; Parrots; no swimming.
Take the Head road out from beaudesert, or go via Warwick.
http://www.queenslandholidays.com.au/southern_downs/queen-mary-falls-caravan-park/index.cfm

FOr teenages, either the beach (Double Island) or Clarence River would be my pick..regards...........Keith

Armstrong Creek was sold about 12 months ago. I was told the new owners don't allow camping.

Lake Cressbrook is also a nice spot. Amenities neat and tidy - flush toilets and H/C showers. $2 fee to go around to the dam and fish (if you take the car/boat) or walk down from the campsites. 6 spots for caravans/campers and about 15 spots for tents. Mid week best. Self registration. Can't book ahead. Fires allowed - they supply pine offcuts.

Neerum Creek has changed owners recently too. Still a nice spot with waterholes. Good amenities blocks - flush toilets and H/C showers.

Cheers
Kym
