I am after some info for a friend regarding oil. He has a 1997 Landcruiser, 4.5lt petrol, Auto Trans. It is only ever used to tow a 2 horse float(he and his wife are in the horse racing game). The car currently has 156,000km on the clock.

What grade of oil and what type of oil should he be using? Should he be changing the oil more frequently(5,000km) noting the vehicle is always towing.

Any info greatly appreciated.

If it were mine I would change the oil every 5000

Any good oil, particularly one which will hold the soot in suspension, will stop the engine wear to the minimum.

I would also ensure that the transmission was flushed completely at the interval laid down in the service manual.

Jason,
oil should be a 15W-40 or a 10W-30, slightly heavier weight would be better considering the service, a good quality oil would be 10,000 I would of thought. Filter change same as the oil. Auto trans is an Autran DX 2 or 3. The Autran DX2 has slightly better anti foaming properties than the 3. Capacity is 6.0 litres.
My opinions and views as usual. Hope this helps, perhaps a synthetic, has better properties, lubricity, anti soot, stability and better heat dissipation, costs considerably more by pays for itself in the long run.
Keep the shiny side up
