Item from The Chronicle (Wide Bay 09/01/06)
VISITORS with low clearance vehicles and inadequate retrieval gear are being told to expect difficulties on the tracks and roads on Fraser Island and in and around Cooloola and
Inskip Point. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service said roads including Cooloola's Freshwater Road, the road from Kingfisher Bay Resort to Lake Mackenzie, the road from Happy Valley to Moon Point and the road through Inskip camping grounds should be avoided until conditions improve. For details visit www.epa.qld.gov.au
Hope this will assist those unaware.
cheers
JayJay

JJ I was just there two weeks ago and could not believe the amount of low clearance vehicles over there Hyundai Tuscon, Subaru's Foresters etc. Then of coure there was the club cars that are about 4 foot in the air to the diff. I followed a Subaru wagon type thing, looked like a commodore with a front diff back from lake mackenzie, it was great the track was flattened out, i could not help but wonder how much the Subaru was damaged. I would not take my Hilux around
Bathurst at speed so why do peope persist with these cars of washed and churned out tracks. Oh
well at least they are having fun.

The 198x Mazda 323 on
the beach near the Mahino Wreck around new years day must have not read the article.
Did see a soft-roader have a lot of problems reaching the barge on the 24th Dec though. Good entertainment.

I take it that
the beach cuttings at
Tewantin must be a mess also. On a positve note the king tide and rain must have helped settle it all down.
Kind regards

Thanks Dags, it is amazing though how many use the no.1 and get stuck. Personally don't mind it because it is a bit of a challenge. Usually on the way
home I have it down pat and even with the trailer don't have too much trouble.
Hope you had a great time.
Kind regards

I haven't been up to Fraser for maybe 3 years but last time I was there the Hook Pt bypass road was in absolutely woeful condition. I'd say I could maintain a top speed of about 20km/h in the old 40 Series, and it was an extremely rough and painful drive. I was just wondering if there's been any upgrade or improvement done since? Just curious!
Cheers,
Socey.

The Hook Pt bypass was OK. Not perfect but I am glad there was not a radar there during my visit over christmas. 50K speed limit.

Hi Socey,
A few weeks ago we were heading back to the barge along
the beach and I decided to take the Hook Pt bypass to
check it out. All the info online had said it had been upgraded. I though they meant a sealed road had been put through, but it has just been graded into a decent wide dirt road. Probably averaged 80km/h along there, no problems.
Thanks,
Aaron.

Sounds great! A graded dirt road would be
heaven compared o what it was like. Added to that, I'm now driving a GXL 80 Series as opposed to the clapped out old 40 series I'd give it another go! ;-)
Thanks for the info Redeye and Aaron!

jay jay believe they leave the tracks and roads rough as guts to slow the traffic down over holidays never mind the lads who sat at orchard powdering up the track also dug a trench at the top to add too there entertainment. (every dog has his day)
hook point has been a bit scary for awhile now same ol story if your going to travel the beach know the tide times and sizes and know your tyre pressures and load your vechile correctly dags
