Does anyone out there know if the cars & trucks follow the same route as the bikes on the Dakar.??? Seems to me that some of the bike sections would be extremely difficult for the cars (apart from Mitsubishi)...and some of the car sections would seem nigh impossible for the BIG wheelers.
Apart from the sad loss of Andy Caldecott- it's been very entertaining viewing.

signman, you often see the bikes, cars and/or trucks in the same shots, or may be overtaking the other, even taking avoiding moves. It seems that as long as competitors pass through the check points and the GPS waypoints the actual tracks are optional.

Andy had actually missed a GPS waypoint earlier in the week. It was nice to see other motorsport competitors talk so highly of him last night in the tributes. A sad loss indeed.

Signman

I'm pretty sure they all go the same route and on the same track from my observations.

You will often see cars, trucks etc passing each other with bikes on the same track.
I actually wonder that there aren't more accidents between competitors especially when you look at the size of the trucks compared to the others.

Same Route . . . Yes . . . same track . . . depends.

Often its a case of get from point A to Point B . . . sometimes there is a track , or several , sometimes nothing but sand.

I believe this year the bikes especially are fitted with an electronic gizmo, which beeps if another vehicle is getting close. It's used to warn riders etc, that they are about to be passed.

Very sad about Andy.

Happy trails, Mike.

They were also speed limited to 160kph . . . unfortunately I believe Andy came off at about 150.

The bikes are not speedlimited but they do get a beep at 150km/h and get time penalties for speeding.
Be intersting to see what KTM does after Andy got killed. KTM has lost ahandful of riders over the years.
A real shame about Andy, I met him many years ago near Williams Creek. A real nice guy and very easy to talk to.
I hope KTM look after Andy's wife and child somehow, people like him never make much money.
