For some reason my 80 series gearbox is making extra noise. This has come on rather suddenly and is most noticeable in 4th and 5th gears. It's only done 300,000. A slightlty, rattly metallic sort of sound that I guess is bearing related. The gearbox continues to work perfectly (including the hard shifting when cold from 1st to 2nd and back). I'm looking for suggestions as to what to do given I'm a poverty struck Melbournite with a view to a big trip in a year or so. Should I try a different oil or bite the bullet and fully reco gearbox (?cost) or any suggestions re second hand? Anyone know anyone knowledgeable about L/C gearboxes in Melbourne? By the way its a 1HZ motor. Many thanks in anticipation

IMHO...change oil ...and add some NULON...if after that you still 'hear' noises..turn radio up...I think your problem is that you imagine you have a problem when a bit of noise is only a distraction ??? An LC 80 series 'box' is one hell of a big mother...and built to last / outlast all the rest of the unit ..

MichaelR One thing to check it the rubber sealing boot from the inside of the cab to the outside of the cab it makes a hell of a noise if it's split.

Michael, This may sound funny but try disconnecting your speedo cable and go for a drive. I would have NEVER believed it was my speedo cable making the noise that it was until as I last resort I disconnected it. Bit of a clean and some oil down it and never a problem again. I know of others who have done the same.

Cheers Tony

HI Michael. I have done many overhauls on 80srs transfere cases it souinds like may be you have a bearing on the way out and most likely the inner bearing on the centre gear in the case, but do them all in the case as fine particles mix thru the case when this happens.
Can cost from 1500 to 2,000 when done properly. My daughters was only done a short time ago and what it sounded like was as you backed off on the throttle it sounded worse as under power but on free run little noise, good luck hope this helps.

Thanks Bill S. Now you mention it, the noise is worse under load, slightly less under decceleration and almost nonexistant when coasting. Disappears when the clutch is in which I guess would discount the speedo cable theory (thanks Tonysmc). It's starting to sound expensive! Might try a different oil and if no luck then have the thing overhauled. My only concern is doing more damage to the gearbox if I leave it too long.
