Hi All,

I have a 99 2.7L petrol hilux - done 125,000kms. Fuel consumption has gone through the roof in the last month or so and am now only getting about 320kms per tank - prior to this I could expect in excess of 550kms per tank. Driving is exactly the same - around town and occasionally to the boat ramp.

Did a Cape Trip in May/June with no issues - the problem has surfaced since then.

I have checked all the obvious things like hoses and leaks and have replaced air/fuel and oil filters.

Exhaust gas stinks - smells like it is running very rich. Other than that it seems to be running well enough.

Any ideas - I need help!!!

Thanks,

Shaun

Could be anything but likely a sensor, or electrical problem affecting ECU. Perhaps engine temperature sensor or mass airflow sensor or similar. Could be a bad earth somewhere too.

Sounds like the air flow sensor. Might be worth pulling it out and giving it a clean with some carbi cleaner. Be VERY careful not to break the fine wires inside. If you do you will be up for a new sensor. Toyota will charge around $750 for a replacement unit.

On Toyota's they are next in line after the air filter. They tend to play up after 100k and earlier if you run an oil based air filter. If the wires in the sensor are clogged, the engines thinks it is being starved of air and will compensate with more fuel. It is nice and easy to get to, so I would be giving it a go first.

Pull the leads off and just sit them over the plug and then start the mutha and one at a time move the lead away from the plug and the engine will die a little, they all should die the same amount. I wouldn't mind betting that you have one or two lazy plugs, replace the fuel filter while your at it as these are often forgotten and ignored by service agents.(even though they charge you 4 it)

Hi

The oxygen sensor on the exhaust is one of those things that causes what you have decibed, especially if they are not cycling properly, it maybe telling the ecu the motor hasn't warmed up yet , so the ecu is continuing to supply the extra fuel.
Sort of like having a choke on all the time.

Cheers
