With the nature of long distance 4wding for a year, the vehicle and particularly the camping, 4wd equipment and personal effects in it are worth a lot more than your average wagon in town with nothing in it.

Has anyone any suggestions on insurance. It seems we could get either normal vehicle insurance for an agreed value for the vehicle, and value the vehicle with it's contents or get seperate insurance for the contents and equipment. Anybody have any sugestions or experiences to share? I hate to think what would happen if the car and all the heaps of stuff we cram in it got stolen.

I've just 'lost' my car with all what was inside.
The contents were not covered which included all my camping gear, a Laptop, camera, GPS etc.
The house Ins would have covered the battery powered things if I had have had them added to the policy.

So it does pay to check what you have covered.

Now Colin, how can a car become "lost". I know we are all getting on in years but.

I have just had a very unpleasant experience trying to insure some equipment that I carry in our 4wd and caravan. I have insurance with RACQ who give me a very good price because of my gold service, +55, several policies etc., however the trouble I went through to get my solar, fridge, generator etc covered was ridiculous. Each time I rang up I got a different person and a different interpretation of their rules (sometimes 180 degrees different) and after four tries and nearly taking everything to another company I went to the Morayfield shopfront and Cherie was a big improvement on the phone front line staff. After careful consideration I stayed with them.

I found that NRMA was very good with price and cover on the vehicles, but no so on the house and contents. Give them a ring, as it appears that they are chasing business at the moment and are giving good deals.

Thanks for the reply very helpful. Seems this is a bit of an insurance niche that none of the usual companies understand or have a dedicated product for.

So you got vehicle insurance and then "home and contents" for the contents of the vehicle from someone else?
