According to the local tyre place...........................He reckons the new Kevlar Wranglers are the go.

I still think you can't go past BFG's though.

Damien,

I ran BFG's on my 1998 Dicovery through the Simpson in 2004 and on the Canning from Halls creek to Willuna and then over the Gunbarrel to Ayres Rock in 2005. The tyres are good grippers but the sharp outback stones do tear them apart. I believe the BFG compound is too soft for outback Australian conditions. I could go past BFG next time I'm in for tyres.

Chris.

On my 3rd set having run them on several vehicles. Have been very happy with them, both performance off road, on road and wear.

Had the BFG's on my last Jackaroo and was happy with them. Main difference when swapped to Coopers in AT brand not as much rock damage. (Do a lot of loose rock driving here) The BFG's got torn up more easily and showed more signs of damage after a run.

GO with what you know unless you have someone's opinion who has run them that you trust. Too many $$$ involved to end up unhappy with the purchase!

Sorry would have thought it was obvios - Dont go to a tyre shop for advice on tyres, they will try and sell you what they stock rather than give an unbiased opinion
THATS my point

So why did you go to 3 tyre places recently? Did you want advice on sponge cakes?

I know a good cake shop that can give advice on tyres!

You assume to much or are you just bored.
I didnt go to 3 tyre shops for advice on tyres I went to 3 tyre shops to get a price on 4 goodyear MTR - it called "shopping around for the best price" The advice on tyres was not wanted or asked for but they gave it anyway all they ended up doing was proving they knew nothing about tyres. Seller 1 was not even aware of the changes that had been made to the goodyear range from 10 years ago seller 2 had no idea what ply rating was in the tyres he was trying to sell me and seller 3 actually has the tyres i was buying on his ute and reckoned he had no problems with them out bush collecting firewood

Another funny thing, if you go to the Nissan dealer Toyota are crap, if you go to the Toyota dealer Nissan are crap.
And funnily enough if you go to Mitsubishi neither of them are any good.

Cooper sell a bloody lot of tyres in this world. Funny how one or two people in Australia and the odd dozen in the US are the only ones to have seen through their ploy!!

next,

BFG sell a bloody lot of tyres in this world. Funny how one or two people in Australia and the odd dozen in the US are the only ones to have seen through their ploy!!

then,

Bridgestone sell a bloody lot of tyres in this world. Funny how one or two people in Australia and the odd dozen in the US are the only ones to have seen through their ploy!!

All tyre brands have their fans and detractors, just pick what works for you.

If you are going to do lots of loose rock and gravel running, the tyres that fare the best are H/T or highway pattern tyres so long as they are 8 or 10 ply LT costruction. This type of tyre does not have agressive lugs to get ripped off or chipped and seem to suffer less tread damage on our outback roads and tracks. I am talking from experience here.

Damage to the tyres may be correct, however it really depends how much driving you're doing in these conditions. The other thing you need to consider is comfort. I've had straight Light truck tyres on a rodeo, I've had HT, and AT, and just upgraded to STT mud tyres on my dual cab hilux. Now I can tell you that I'd MUCH prefer to travel on loose rocks / gravel roads with the STTs. unless you want to be adjusting tyre pressures regularly, the Mud tyres are a LOT more comfortable.
The Light truck tyres last forever and are pretty good, but no grip when it gets wet or tough. HTs are a bit of a waste on a 4x4 in IMO. ATs are really HT with more flexibility. Before the STTs I was happy with the other tyres. I got the STTs on the hilux two days ago and drove a few hundred kms with a bit of gravel and 4x4ing. The STTs are very comfortabe on gravel / loose rock roads - you can't feel the rocks and gravel - the HT / AT you can almost feel every rock. I wonder how much less wear and tear you experience on your mechanical components (suspension, etc). The difference was quite noticable IMO

The best tyres are the new italian ones.
dago through Ice
dago through mud
dago through anyting
and when dago flat dago wop wop wop.

I always notice the crap tyres are never sold by the dealers who call them crap.
Maybe because they think they are crap.
cheers

Before I went away last year I put 4 new coopers on and they are now about 1/4 worn with 25000 km on them so I suspect that I will get maybe 100000 at a pinch...The Cooper Warranty, if you read it carefully, is not worth the paper it's printed on.
