Hi all can anybody tell me wether I should be getting my tappets done at any certain time, Have never touched them but was informed they should be checked. Any signs that they would need doing except the obvious tapping noise or is this just another way for the mechanic to make money off me. Regards Steve M

Depends on vehicle, my Navara is every 20,000km, should be listed in handbook servicing intervals.

I do my own, but if I had to put it in, I would be expecting it done in an hours labour with no parts except possibly a rocker cover gasket which is bout $20 tops.

Worth doing as recommended by manufacturer.

Hi Stephen.

Tappet or more correctly valve clearances can increase and cause a slight noise.
However due to valve seat socketing and stem stretch the clearance is more likely to decrease.
This causes the valve to "ride" or stay slightly open in a severe case.
The ultimate penalty of this is a burned out valve\seat.
This usually causes a miss at idle as a first sign.
Your mechanic will willingly take your hard earned to set them for you but is money well spent.
It used to be an essential part of any major service but many vehicles now have hydraulic valve lifters\adjusters so it is gradually becoming a thing of the past.

p.s. use a good mechanic.

I hope this helps you.

Just another point,
I see from you profile you own a 1989 Hi-Lux.
If this vehicle has an 18R overhead cam motor I would definitely recommend a valve clearance inspection as the gaps tend to close up on these engines.

Hi Eddy the 80 series recomended every 20 000km's check and adjust the 100 series check every 40000km's but says in the book
(auditory method)so if they sound noisy do them if not don't,But as you say noisy tappets arnt a problem it tight one's that will do the damage.
(don't quote me on the intervals but you get the jist)
