MMMM,
You may have burnt out an exhaust valve, possibly more than one, this causes low compression and a chuff chuff sound out the exhaust.
Can you hear "chuffing"when it turns over from the oil filler hole?
Low or no compression means it will turn over faster on the starter motor.
This could be secondary damage caused by either a blocked cooling system ie frozen closed thermostat or a catastropic failure of the water pump( the belt still on?) which has led to overheating.
Any water in the oil? looks like a creamy paste, look at the bottom side of the oil filler cap.
I suspect you may have cooked it, get a competant mechanic to look at it.

Chuffing noise from the exhaust hey, cold radiator hey, just guessing your thermostat might have ceased and your head gasket is gone and you burnt out a valve in the process. just for interest sake PM me when you find out . Pull the glow plugs and hire diesel compression tester and check compression, if its down the head has to come off anyway and I bet you will find that when you put the head in for seals and reseating of valves that an exhaust valve is not seating properly. Good luck but if you do it yourself you could get out of it for maybe around $500 or up to $1500 at a mechanic. Shop around some mechanics are rip offs when it comes to diesels go where others have had good service.

Well its not good news sounds like you cooked the motor, then the camshaft seized breaking timing belt and possibly valves hence no more compression,i could be wrong but from what you say that's it!

Hi
did u put petrol or diesel in when you last filled up??? Friend put diesel in his 202 holden and it did thesame thing....
I would be looking for a wrecked 2.8 in damaged vehicles section of www.pickles.com.au if you want to keep it a 2.8 diesel, or marks adapters if you want to fit in a different motor....id say the smoke has got out of this motor and it will never be good again even if you pay 10k to rebuild it.

I've got a reco 28 diesel that you can have for a slab, it was reco'd then the vehicle was stolen and burnt, the inlet manifold and ancillaries are toast but engine is ok.
It is in Sydney.
