i have 2 straps sitting in the back of car, just wondering how long a snatch strap is good for if only used occasionally . i.e do they perish just sitting around not being used.use by date or what.

Sub,

As long as they have been put away clean and dry they should have a good shelf life.
If you are in doubt buy a new one, it is not worth the risk if it should happen to fail when needed the most.

Store them clean, dry and out of the sun and with limited light use it will last for many many years. However if it gets used for a few very hard snatches (God forbid) ditch it for a newie.

yeah ditto the above comments, but also, don't store them in plastic I reckon. Some calico, canvas or cotton bag, to allow any moisture to breath out. And don't lend them to anyone to use unless you are there and watching. Ensure they are cleaned and dried after use. Like a good Dogman who needs to rely (and is relied upon) to secure a load with reliable slings, regularly inspect your straps. Then, if in doubt, chuck it out.

as long as they are looked after they'll be right...we use hubbys old climbing ropes that have had falls on them- they are as strongs as ever! we roll ours up and leave them in a bag with the rest of recovery gear...try not to tangle them up, get knots in them all that!
