G'day good people.

I have a mate that comes over from the USA each year to do some gold prospecting. He hires or buys a 2nd hand truck each and sells it when he goes home.

He's finding the Cruisers and Patrols a bit pricey these days and is now considering an mid '80's Nissan Navara. Or something similar. It needs to pull a caravan of around 16'. and be able tp go offroad on dirt tracks, but no "hardcore" 4WD stuff.

I don't have much idea about these 'smaller" 4wd trucks having been a Patrol or 'Cruiser man fer the last 25 years.

How reliable have the Navaras been over the years and is there anything else that we'd recommend to suit the purpose?

Any comments or ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Bilbo

hey bilbo,
Brom here...i got a holden rodeo 4 work(2wd) and have taken it up to the murray river with camper(14 ft) have had no problems even after a bit of rain. a mate of mine just purchased a holden rodeo 4x4 turbo deisel(same model..couple of years younger.) he and i went 4wd out the back of gembrook, vic.(some decent trails) just to see what she could do...pretty impressed!she did lose her back end once but the rutts were pretty hard core my mates patrol and my hilux got through but we had better clearance. having said that she snatched the patrol out of trouble a bit later down the track(patrol took on a bog that was deceptive...up 2 the axels) 3rd snatch and she was away...4 my money not a bad rig 4 what u need! hope this helps...

Pathfinder, bombproof auto only and can be a tad thirsty. Jackaroo's, cheap, strong reliable underrated 4x4, diesel's a gem, Early Navara's, dodgey gearboxs, later OK, Triton's, cheap to buy, maginal off-road, need a paddock to turn around in, but would do the job.Disco's, low k's should be OK, but will cost a bomb if it breaks,Exploders, er, good luck!
