G'day ExploreOZ'rs, I need some advice on a transmission swap/reco for a '83 modified Patrol. My Patrol has a stock 4 speed hooked up to a 253 V8 Holden and my snail is in need of some overdrive. Transmissions have never been my cup of tea and im wondering if I should just swap it or have it reconditioned with hardened overdrive? If a swap is in order, what tranny makes and models should I be looking for to bolt a 253? If there are any Patrol owners out there with tranny conversions your advice is appreciated...cheers!

The next model year, 1984 was the first of the 5 speed boxes. It's a bolt on replacement as regards to the bolt pattern and clutch first motion shaft. But it is a longer casing so you either can move the engine forward, which would be the easier option, or have the tailshafts altered to accept the longer trans. You will gain the overdrive 5th gear, but lose a bit of crawl speed due to a slightly higher first gear in the 5 speeder.Clutch, slave etc is all the same.

In the late 80's I had a 3.3 L Nissan Patrol LWB (1982 model). At the time I was told the Nissan Caball (Light Truck) gearbox would bolt straight onto the Patrol housing. The Caball I understood to be a 5 speed box with fifth gear ratio around .76 Might be worth checking. Cheers.
