Heard a couple of guys who were just taking off for a long-ish trip mention something about taking out what I understand to be Recovery Insurance.

Guy #1 said he had suffered a breakdown in some remote location and called for help. A tow truck operator later told him that if he did not have the insurance he would never have been able to get anyone out to pick him up.

Does anyone know about this insurance .. who does it ... or whatever?

Thanks in advance.

Not lately.

There used to be a mob called . . . World Wide Insurance . . . or something like that.

It was a bit like the NRMA/RACV etc , for remote breakdowns.

I haven't heard of them for a long time , or if anyone replaced them.

I googled nothing ???

Thanks flappa.

Yeah I came up empty on Google as well. I have the "all singing all dancing" Premium cover with NRMA here, but I only get a 100km tow.
Still, I guess it beats walking.

They were called World Assist, they don't cover remote recovery anymore.

They have since changed their name to Mondial and offer NRMA/RACV type assistance only.

Hi Jack, I have asked this question before with few results. The other day I rang the RACQ because I'm a member and have "Ultracare", top billing. They assured me that if I were on a public track, ie a truck could get in, that they would do everything in their power to get people out and the vehicle at the same time or later. The girl gave me a special help desk number just in case. Ring us if you get stuck anywhere. Anywhere ? Yep. Oodnadatta ? Yep. 400k along the Gary Junction road ? Yep.
This applies throughout Australia, any state any desert. Amazing.
What I didnt ask was who paid, I was too surprised to find out that such service was availiable.
If anyone rings to confirm, please ask who pays and let me know :)))

High Country three weeks ago, mate breaks down on track. He is a member of NRMA so we call them and they put him through to RACV

Nope RACV will not come and do recovery on 4WD track you have to be on a 2WD road (that is there explanation). Very helpful though and provided name of recovery place. (User pays.- 125 hour depot to depot)

6 months ago, I broke down in Watagans SF, on track, NRMA (I am member) send repairman, and then provide the free tow.

So I am not really sure about reciprocal state services

Peter, now thats a worry. I asked if it meant any state and the RACQ said yes. ...Maybe they meant at my expense.....

Similar experience . . . NRMA/RACV/RACQ wont come and get you if it requires 4wd. Only if its accessable by a 2wd truck.

That is a general rule.

I believe , it can change if the local Agent does have a 4wd truck . . . there are a few around.

Jack

The only insurer that it could have been was Lumleys and it is only avlb through CMCA membership AND you must have a campervan or caravan or bus etc.

From what I read they will recover from anywhere, anytime at their cost.
