gday all,

My Patrol has somithing lose underneath, I'd say front end, sounds like something swings back under accel/braking and hits the chassis. I've spent ages looking at the exhaust/springs/chassis but can't isolate what causes the noise (it's quite a ringing sort of 'dong' sound). I even changed the leading arm bushes cos they were worn but this didn't cure it either. It's not the bumpstops loose in the front springs either cos they dropped and were removed off yrs ago!!

Any idea's much appreciated.

Cheers
Daffyd.

Hi Daffyd,

I had a similar noise in my old GQ and it drove me nuts, till one day in desperation I systematically replaced the body mount rubbers.
( between the chassis and the body), there is about 8 of them from memory. The result was --- no more noise.

Hope this helps.

GQs if used for mod to severe offroad tend to get a few clunks in them.

There is one caused by the floor pan cracking under drivers feet where the firewall meets teh floor.

Ringing sound sounds dodgey, there is another clunk caused by body lift or body mount bolts coming loose. If you have a body lift in there they can be a prick... Lots complain of the same thing.

Does it sound(this may sound dumb) the brake caliper loose?? I have this sound in mine :(

Daffyd (you're a taffy??)

It is probably the front 4 body mounts (2 on each side). After going to the Cape last year in my '89 Patrol, it was almost groaning when moving off the line, and knocking and clunking under brakes etc. After doing the body/chassis mounts, all disappeared - like new.

Let us know if it is something different.

I think you will find that the coil springs can make that sort of sound at times with the right amount wear on the saddles and tension on the spring (eg acceleration deceleration)- to test this just squirt some WD40, light oil or similar up into the upper and lower spring saddles and see if that temporarily stops the noise I think youll find this to be the culprit. Slightly more probable if you've got higher springs - just a bit of wear -
let me know how you fare

Daffyd

It could be any of the listed problems. But mine had a similar sound to what you describe and after extensive checks, I found it was simply one of the brackets on the heat protection plates above the middle muffler had broken. Visually, it looked ok, but when I pushed up on this plate, and released it - same "dong" sound.
Repaired bracket - no noise
