I am looking at fitting Coil Rite air bags to the rear of my 2002 Nissan Patrol 4800 TI (2" Lift). Has anybody else fitted them to a Patrol and do you need to drill anything or modify anything on the car???

My mind is made up on the Air Bags so I don't need any suggestions as to alternative otions, only advice on fitting.

Cheers,

Graham

Shawn,
Whilst on the subject
Do the coilrites need spacers when you do a susp. lift or can you still use the standard bags without spacers

Umm, I had to drill one hole on each side when I fitted the firestones to the Surf. Not big deal though, it was just in the base where the spring sits to let the air line go through. Peice of cake to fit and they are an excellent product!

With a lift you do not need spacers, in fact it's better IMHO with a lift and no spacers as it puts less strain on the bag and lets you get better articulation.

The air bags work by squeazing in between the gaps in the coils not by pushing directly up and down on the bump stop and base. I put a two in lift in mine and just swapped the bags over to the new springs, they work just the same as they used to. Before they used to push up on the bump stop (or what was left of it after I cut it down, another slight mod I had to do as stated by the instructions to make them fit). Now they don't touch the bumps stop at all unless I'm articulating but work exactly the same.

Sorry for the late reply Grizzle,
But yes you do need the spacers, I can't remember exact height of them but they would be close to 2".
I thought the spacers were the hardest things to fit when I did it, having to compress the spring on full articutaion to seat them in place. The coilrite bags and airlines were p*ss easy.
I fiddled around about two weeks later and ran the airlines up into the back of the wagon with the air valves located either side of my draw system.

I have the coil rites fitted to my 3.0 litre GU Nissan.
If your actual lift is 2 inches above what was standard you really need the spacers as the bag is stretching itself to reach each end of the coil retainers, however as previously advised the bags do work by filling the spring coil spaces but upon inflation do extend in length.
Having said that,in reality even though you have 2 inch lift springs in many cases once you add your acessories fridge ,drawers etc the height is no longer the 2 inch lift.
On my truck it settled to about 1 inch of actual lift and I installed the air bags without spacers with good results.(compare your trucks height with a new vehicle)
I have found with the 33% heavier springs the air bags give the best ride at 6 psi,if inflated to 10 psi the truck seems to bounce around to much.
On Sunday I was at the Melbourne 4wdrive training ground with a group of Discoveries and the Nissans articulation was greater by far, even with the bags installed,so you will loose no performance from their installation.

Got the airbag info Part number 4129. I spoke to trucksprings but they are unsure of the 2" lift spacers. do they come with the kit or do they need to be purchased separately. I mentioned 4129(R2) as I have seen on this site but they had no idea about the (R2). If they need to be purchased separately where can I get them.

Graham,
Truck springs will not be able to supply the spacers based on past experience.
I used rubber wheels which were the right thickness and the axle hole was used to bolt them to the spring mounts.
But you could try Pedders who are polyair agents and buy the spacers from them.

from what I understand the size of the air bags you need to order are based on the ride height of your vehicle.

Dont know about the Nissan ,but I just spent last Saturday afternoon fitting coilrites to my 80series tojo ,easy as ,hardest part was to remove and cut down bump stops ,and on instruction sheet air tube is routed through bump stop "hole" ,no such thing on mine so fitted bags inverted as a ready made hole in centre of spring seat on axle.

Ok guys,

Fitted the Coil-Rites last night. Real Easy. Air lines to the top, The supplied spacer fitted into the large hole in the spring seat at the top. At the moment I have temporarily run the lines out underneath the back doors inbetween the bumper and body and cable tied them to the rear recovery hook. Before the air bags my rear was 40mm lower than the front. On full pressure (45 psi) the rear is 40mm higher than the front. I am going away this weekend towing a Jayco Offroad Swan. I will try it without level rides and give feedback next week. I will get spacers made for the 2" lift (or buy some wheels the right size as suggested by someone earlier) and fit a lift kit.

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

Regards,

Graham
