How do I search the current threads. Currently when I search it only displays the archived threads.

Use a start date - Archiving occurs after 1 month so if you only want current open the calendar selection function (the little image next to the startdate box and simply hit (- Mth) the click on the date shown - Run your search and you will only get current results.
I will add this to the help system shortly.
