I have a spare 15W BP Panel, that i originally bought as a trickle charger. Worked very well in maintaining the battery, as the car was only run once a fortnight.

I now have a 24V vehicle...with a 3rd 12v aux AGM in the back which is charged very effectively..and not requiring an extra piddly 15W.

The 15W panel is fixed to a tool box on the roof...going to waste.

My thoughts:

Mount a small 7.2 or 12A/h or small sealed Lead acid battery in the toolbox...charged off the panel (it has a 5A regulator).

Then it can be used to power camp lighting, leaving the aux to power only the fridge.

Just trying to find a use for my Panel...thats all...and if i can devise a reasonably self sustaining ability to run a versalight or such...then seems to be a winner.

Any thoughts on the matter?

Don't shoot me if this sounds stupid.....
If the panel outputs 15W @ 12V...would it put out (about) 7.5W @ 24V??

Just some tips on Electrical quantities.

Power is conserved - not Voltage or Current.

If a Panel put out 12 volts at 1 Amp (12x1= 12 watts) and you converted it with 100% efficiency to 24 volts, you would be able to get 0.5Amp (still 12 watts).

It only puts out 16 or 17V open voltage...so cant be altered to run 24v.

The starter batteries dont need any trickle assistance, they cope very well...and the 24v import cranks over and starts faster than the 12v trol i had.

lol

Hi Cruiser, giving/selling it wasnt really on my shortlist.

I tend to hoard things...as they may always be useful 'one day'.

I picked mine up off ebay for $145 12 months ago...

A battery in a Toolbox on the Roof won't last long, the heat will kill it.

I would just connect the Panel to the existing 12volt Aux battery. It will keep it topped up and therefore lengthen its life by keeping it closer to 100% charged more of the time. This will reduce Sulphation.
