Willem
It started playing up on Monday and today it was no more.
Our valiant plastic bodied 15lt Engel has succumbed to the vagaries of time.
Purchased in February 1986 it has seen a multitude of bush trips. It had never been serviced(not sure if one can service them). The electrical socket at the bottom of the fridge
broke after about 10 years and the body fell apart on the CSR in 94(having busted two shockies early in the trip), but we patched it all together and it kept on going and going and going.
I think it is an electrical fault and will play around with that in mind to see if I can get it working again for a beer fridge in the back yard.
So we went to the camping place in Pirie and invested in a Waeco 40lt with digital read out. Won't know ourselves. We were still keen on another Engel but we saved $200 on the purchase price with the Waeco.
The Waeco will live in the Xtrail.

We sit gathered here tonight, in front of our screens, to talk, about the life of Willie’s Engel.
Willies Engel came into his world in February of 1986.
Willies Engel was to become a lifelong companion, accompanying Willie on many long trips. Willie doted on Engel, and always gave him the full 12 volts he deserved, even when the weather was cool, Willie still kept him going.
There are perhaps many of us here tonight, who have had some gifts from the Engel of Willem, on their various get togethers in the bush. I am sure that some of the strange firewaters from Africa, along with the infamous Prickly Pear Juice, have been stored in the deep bowels on Engel at some time.
I met Engel once. He was in Judith’s car, sitting there all alone, and looking a little worse for wear. He was in retirement at that stage, and was simply minding the groceries on the Pirie -
Peterborough run, an easy two run....
Engel has departed us, but he is not forgotten. The name shall live on...
And you brought a WHAT?

Sorry to disappoint you, Wolfie
We run out of readies when it came to pay up and the closest EO Bank Manager was 100 kilometres away.
Yes, I bought a Waeco or rather, Judith bought a Waeco. I still have my Engel in the Patrol. Great-grandson of Plastic Engel is going strong at 4 years of age.
Will see how Waeco goes but it will lead a sheltered life I presume, apart from being jumped on by Jeddah!! No rough stuff for this AWD!

Willem said "our valiant plastic bodied 15l. engel..."
Crap!..... Engel never made plastic bodied fridges. And at the time it was a 17l., not 15.
And they can have leaks fixed and be re gassed if needed.

Willem,
That is a CATastrophe probably making you feel positively CATatonic.
All C A T jokes aside, I've a 25 year old Engel 40 litre and a 2 year old
Waeco 110 litre. The one that still fills me with the most confidence is the old Engel.
It has lived in the rear of the last four 4x4's including a Table Top and in the next three weeks will move into the rear of number five.
I don't expect the Engel to complain at all. I wish I was still as tough as that old
fridge !
Geoff.

SSSHHHhhhh !!!!! (Is that how you spell it?) Don't tell anyone but when I was in WA last January I actually bought a little
Waeco that hold about 6 cans and a few other little bits, it sits between the front seats and is very useful saves opening the 60 Litre Engel when you want a can of coke.

Its real good as a drink cooler in the mornings I take 6 cans of coke and a bottle of water or two plus whatever else I want or can fit in it cold out of the big
fridge and it keeps them that way for the day nice and cold and it saves having to open the big
fridge every time.
I guess you could stick a few sandwiches etc in it if you where a tradie using it for a lunch box type of thing on the job.
It won't freeze etc and I turn it off at night when I am camped to save power. for $99 it does quite OK.
