All these 60 & 70 series cruisers have a very sensitive throttles. You get used to it but for off road hills I suggest you use the hand throttle. It makes life a lot smoother. Hope this helps.

Hi Dingo, This problem is only with the Factory Turbo motors. If anyone says that it is common with all Toyota Diesels they obviously have never driven the factory Turbo off road.I have owned troopys and utes with the 2 H and the 4.2 and believe me they do not have a jumpy throttle. I owned an HJ61 Turbo with the 12-HT motor for 3 years and had the same problem. It drove me so crazy that I almost sold it as it was sometimes undrivable in bumpy terrain. I can sympathise with you as it makes off road travel almost unbareable. I tries softer return springs, no springs, pedal heights you name it I tried it. Eventually I found out that there is a solution to the problem as it is common to all of these motors. So don't sell the car or take to it with tools (or your right boot). I am not sure what state you are in but I got a kit fitted from a 4WD aftermarket and accessory store in Seaford (melb southern suburb) and it fixed the problem. It drove like a Toyota should. I have no idea what was done, it cost about $100.00 at the time and it worked. As it was some years back and I do not live in Melb any more I cannot remember exactly the name of the place but I can tell you that it was on Stephenson rd about 1 or 2 shops dorn from Rutheford rd in Seaford.

If you are not in Melb then check out any aftermarket 4WD store as anyone with any experience will know that the problem is fixable. The kit does exist. If the mechanic knows nothing about the problem don't bother with them. Keep trying as you fill find someone that knows what it is and how to fix it. Enjoy the HJ 61. It has great power, great economy and believe me they go forever. My brother has one with original motor with 370,000 kms and it still uses no oil. Andy

sorry about the yelling on line.thanks for that Andy, iam glad that my problem makes sense as i was sure that it was significant ,i will try to track down the kit that you got and see how i go.i agree that they are a good bus as i have anly had mine for about 3 yrs and it had 200 000 on it when i got it ,but it really does have a go,i mainly bought it originally to to a 18'6'' boat as the 2H just could not handle with a head orany wind other than tail, but now am very glad that i did buy it and like the idea of not too complicated.if any one knows the name of the outlet at this address it would be a time saver, thanks again.

Be careful towing the boat if you have a manual. I towed a pretty heavy ski boat and stripped the imput drive shaft after a couple of seasons when the car had 250,000 kms on the clock. After a $3500 bill with a rebuilt gearbox, new clutch and flywheel I was advised by several gearbox reconditioners to only tow anything that had significant weight in 4th gear only. The gearbox could handle light trailers and light loads in 5th no worries. I believe that the Auto is stronger for towing. Good luck with the kit. It may be quicker to ask around at 4WD repair stores until you get one. Cheers
