RANT POST.........AD YOUR OWN RANTS AT WILL

I write this just because. Because there are too many people in the aftermarket auto industry in all levels that make things hard for newcomers, try to make a quick buck, and do what ever possible to get some free bread.

I am new to the world of 4wd, why? I lived in America for a long time, I built very fast old cars…it’s the thing to do there. America really does not need 4x4’s at all (except for a VERY small few who require them), they generally have no purpose except as a American homophobic status symbol. (Hummer…what a waste!!!)

Well I’m here now ( have been for a while) and I don’t need a fast old American car to make me smile, the necessity is roving the rugged earth with no worries....to get form point A to B with a big azz smile on my face…I need to build a real 4wd. I may know mechanics, engine efficiency and the American performance industry, but do I know the advanced details about 4wd performance?…NO!

This is fine though, it how we learn and I luv to learn. However, WHAT THE HELL IS WITH YOU PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO TRY AND SQUEZZE WATER OUT OF ROCKS and rip off the people who are trying to learn something new. I don’t frick’n know about highly engineered lifts (I know about drops), I don’t tune for low-end (I tune for ¼ mile), I don’t know about articulation (I know about weight transfer/ tyre grip) etc, etc. DON’T YOU IDIOTS REALIZE ¾ OF THE PEOPLE YOU RIP OFF WOULD HAVE BEEN A RETURN CUSTOMER!!!! I wish I had the time to research more so I didn’t have to “take someone’s word” but rebuild times are huge.

It’s the same way in the States. If you want to build in a genre you have to equate in %15 loss to azz holes….STOP IT!!!! STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!

Right I get the feeling that you are a little bleep off.

This is what these sorts of forums are for

Ask the question and you will get a verity of answers and opinions from people who drive all sorts of 4WD with diffrent setup's and you will learn what you need to know and know the right people to go to, to get the stuff done.

Don’t know how long you have been hear but first thing you will find with anything automotive, especially for Pro-Formance car’s and 4WD’s is chit isn’t cheep

First up

What 4WD do you have and with what engine
How much lift do you what or more to the point need.
What do you need the 4WD to do?

Well at least you have found out that most 4WD shops don’t have good customer service. LOL

1983 MQ and you want to run a elephant 510 lol and you are conserned about cost ? lol

for starters if i can go by the weight of my 502 in caddy , I an tell you that its going to take more than a few bucks here to get part RTA ( road traffic authority ) .

Questons ,

1/ standard crate engine or HP ?

2/ do you want to drive it on the streat ?

3/are you willing to trow 15 to 20 k into the project ?

before you spend your bucks , havea look at saudi arabi , there are heaps of trucks there , already done with 540's and 8/71 ect ect.

Anything can be done , if your willing to give it a go .

answer some of these questions , and we might be able to help.

Ok I will bite, This better not be another one of those bord Prank internet posters looking for Amusement.

1. First up a 253 is a pretty good pulling motor to start with. 510Ci are you serous you will need a 300ltr Fuel tank minimum to take it anywhere out of the metro aria.

If I were you I would look at working the 253 a little or dropping in a late model Fuel injected 308 Holden or 302-ford engine, if you get your hands on a Late 2002 Tick ford 5LTr with the GT40 heads you looking at 220KW with 420Nm of toque with a new Pro-Formance cam Valve sprig’s Extractors and 1.7 roller rockers you will push that to 250Kw+ Chip it and get some more head work done / aftermarket heads and who know where you will end up. Or even an early Gen 3 V8 225Kw, it’s a 4WD how much power do you need.

Personally I would go a 6.5 Chevy diesel.

Get a 5Ltr Ford racing crate motor I could go on but you do not need 510Ci of engine in a 4WD!!!.

For 302 or 308 and 6.5 option you can get gearbox adaptor plates to take the convention I believe.

2. 4-inch lifts with some 33 or 35’s will get you just about anywhere you want to go

3. For Diffs ARB Air Locker in the rear and Detroit up front

Good luck getting that approved for road use as well by the way.

I would call the good people at 4WD monthly they would be more than happy hear from you and will do a story on you 4WD too I bet!!

Seeing this whole "rant" thing is totally out of controle I might as well speak some car before this thread implodes.

Had a 58' Olds, Eighty Eight that ran beach runs when it was new (lived in Daytona) all original race set: J-2 option, three speed on the collum, no radio just a plate, 12 bolt posi...

That car payed from my trip here....best investment i ever made!

I would make he point that the retailers of lift kits try as hard as they can to supply lifts which are legal according to OUR STATE RAODWORTHY REGULATIONS.

Sounds like you walked in "knowing everything", and walked out relizing you knew nothing.

Simple answer 1: research you topic.

Simple answer 2: listen, rather than talk

Simple answer 3: think rather than talk

Simple answer 4: ASK rather than talk

Simple answer 5: treat people with the respect you would hope to recieve yourself

From the tone of your post, I think we all know which side of the counter had the azz hole on it......

So....every place that you walk into, both here and in the US seems to prejudge YOU, and only seems interested in taking your money, eh????? Mmmmm...'kay. I think we can see where the prejudgement comes in......

Read "Simple answer" 1, 1, 1, 4, 2 and 5, in that order.

If you haven't got the time to do "1" then expect to be taken for a ride as a timewaster, you are CHOOSING to be ignorant.

ok , you might not like the idea , but whynot up grade to a GQ , at least this issue is taken care off , I cant see money been the issue , since you want to go with some serieous yankie musle.

if it must be a MQ , then transplant the shell on a gq chassis . this way you avoid a very expensive and in my eyes ,pointless exersise . No Ptrol box will handle the torque of a 510 , you will have to go Yank box with adapter for the transfer case.

hope this helps some what .

I have been modifing 4by's for a while , so if yuu need any info I can be contacted by email

"RANT POST.........AD YOUR OWN RANTS AT WILL" - well you asked for it. You should know by now that the strong survive and the week (or inexperienced) are fair game.. YOU SAID IT YOURSELF..

What people are saying to you is tell the story - don't embellish with "I used to build very fast cars in the States"....... No one cares - all we are interested in is what this forum is about. I too have had my small share of niggles but that is what it is all about. Mike Harding very aptly said the other day in a post "we are not really like this in the person". That is the truth.
Don't take too many of the comments seriously...

As far as racial connotation goes I for one react strongly to that.. enough said on that issue. Lets move on.

I will agree that it is not easy and I also have done the rounds to learn so I and they do understand your plight. As I said - tell the story - ask the questions etc....NO BS...Okay!

Ok then Crazy...what it is all about: (well, at first it was just fun)

I speak in code.

It is a warning to newcommers and/or buyers...be carfull ANY WARE in the "industry"....global.

I clame all right to bitch and mone. The "newcommers" can come in alot of forms...want-a-bees, buyers, distrib's, manufactures.

Think about this...(i even joked about this on this site)...An intake manifold, carburated or injected which produces 110 efficency through 800-10,000 RPM range. Imagine if this was available tomorrow...would you buy it? Yep..you would. But it is impossible right? Nope, I produced it...spent four years in the board rooms of Crane, Holley, Edelbrock, Barry Grant, Yattes, Roush Racing, Willson Manifods....It's all ego, no one wants something THEY did not come up with. And so we sit here in the aftermarket blackhole.

THAT is a rant...but not why I started this thread....I was originally having fun, thought ppl would goin in.

Im just some words on a screen...do you belive them...who cares!

I don't mind someone that's striving for his fair share of "free bread"!
It's a basic human requirement, and possibly the basis of the whole history of civilization!!
The onus is on the government to feed it's poulation, and free bread and free water should be enshrined in the constitution, as a basic right to every citizen..... (in their respective country of choice)!!

Now!!!....... "Free beer" what a waste of resources that would be!!
The alcohol is probably best put to use as a form of fuel for our mobility.
The wheat/barley/hops are better off feeding the starving millions the world over.
(to make 'free bread'??)
The water content, which is around 95% (or more) of beer, would be wisely re-distributed to the drought stricken parts of the country.
.......BLAH!
.......BLAH!
....Oh!......and ........BLAH!

etc...etc....

*RANT/RAVE*..........OFF!

;-)

And the Yanks actually DO build the best "off-road/4WD vehicles!!!
I've seen the abilities of some of those Baja trucks, and they seem to indicate that live axles should have been 'put to pasture' with the stone wheel!!

First up..... I only read some of the above replies..... but I decided to short cut and add my own reply based on my experience.

3 years ago when my SWMBO and I decided to buy a 4WD, I knew NOTHING about them. NOTHING.......Nada, Zip!!!!

I bought magazines, I joined ExplorOz, (and 3 or 4 other forums who shall remain nameless.... I don't use them now) I went to the ARB's and the TJM's and the locals 4WD "Performance" centres and I asked questions..... and I listened carefully to what I was told and went home and weighed it all up. Yep.... sometimes you will come away feeling like you're being taken for a ride, but mostly people will try to help if your attitude is on the level.

Like others have said, try to give the impression you "know-it-all" and if you don't, the guy behind the counter knows straight away. They get this sort of stuff ALL THE TIME!!! And not just from Americans!
;-)

Do your homework....... Every mod on my truck is the result of weeks (months even) of research...... I posted way back in (I think) October here about turbo charging my Nissan....... had it fitted in January, it took me that long to make my mind up on what I wanted... I am now extremely happy with the result.... I have been reading up on suspension for YEARS.... selected my new "kit" last Saturday!
Sam goes for all the other mods on our truck..... lots of homework!

Be humble and you'll get the right advice........ NEARLY always! ;-))

Just my opinion

Cheers

Brian (Gold Coast)

Pararphrased in a nutshell........

"... I wish I had the time to research more so I didn’t have to “take someone’s word” but rebuild times are huge....", then you've got the time, right??? What is an extra 3-4 weeks on a one year build, if it is going to save you several thousand dollars?

What do I know about what you're going though? I'm getting a few "minor " modifications done to a Kia Sportage (cut/edited from another forum I'm on)

"The list of new parts

Holden (GM Buick) 3.8L V6 (~157 kw/304 Nm = 210 hp/225 lbf.ft)
Recoed/strengthened 4L60E transmission + stage two converter manual shift
Adapter from 4L60E to Tcase
Toyota Tacoma (Hilux) gear drive Tcase with 4.7:1 gears, 2-low "twin stick" mod (not a true twin - no rear disconnect)
Nissan Patrol GQ f&r diffs (about the same size as a Dana 60 - 9.25" R&P, 1.5" 31/33 spline axles, rear locker already in. (same H233 diffs in your large Nissans))
Redesign and construction of front and rear suspension
Simex Extreme Trekker 35x11.5 tyres on 15" rims

Everything else that is needed has been included into the labor charge, things like new suspension, brake lines, power steering box to accommodate the front axle being pushed fwd 3", exhaust, custom length driveshafts, and the like, generally the other bits that you won't know you will need until you are in there. Also includes the auto electricals and any basic panel work needed. Basically drive in-drive out."

I have spent the better part of one year researching sizes, parts compatability, and as many of the big and little details as possible, discussing on several forums the pros/cons of different solutions, educating myself about suspension geometry to a level that I am comfortable with, etc, etc. All in all, a very steep learing curve.

There are a couple of sites available on the net that will be able to help you, but only if YOU are prepared to do the right thing and STFU, listen, and learn. Any attempt at the sort of attitude (RANT) you have displayed here will leave your computer as a pile of smoulering ash on your desk from the flaming you will get. Be warned, they have a "Search" button, and "Bibles" on most models of vehicles, AND EXPECT YOU TO USE THEM FIRST!! There is a heap of tech info available (too much to be answering the same old Q's over and over and over), and intelligent, knowledgable ppl to bounce ideas off.

SWMBO??? have a look at the tab on the bottom of the page (when reading posts) marked "Abbreviations", or Google it (it's common enough on the internet).

In Australia we don't really have the need to give ourselves coronaries at the age of 35............Lose the attitude, lighten up, and slow down. No one will mind.

I think you might be barking up the wrong tree Brad - the syntax is all wrong. I think the 'gentleman' making all the accusations is definitely American.
