Bede,

A shot of penicillin will fix it.

They do get hot. The gear box on the 80 series are huge and there fore hold a lot of heat. As long as the gear oil is the correct grade and the quaintly is right then there is not much to worry about.
Roll on winter. It will make a good foot warmer.

I used to love my 80srs for that in winter it had 500,000 kms when left my posession and never gave an ounce of trouble with gearbox,so I would say normal.

Removal of the protection plates allow a bit more air flow around the gearbox/transfer case. Helps a bit more with ground clearance as well.

I have a '94 Petrol Auto GXL 80 and the drivers floor gets REAL warm on a long drive or if you let her sit there and idle with no air flow going under the truck. I get worried about it every now and then but sounds like it's normal!

Normal. If you reckon thats bad, you should try a 45 series! you can burn your hand on the bolts coming thru the tunnel and firewall.
On another note, does your 80 blow out ambient temperature when you crank up the fan on cool? Mine seems to heat it 5-10 degrees, even when its on the coldest setting.

Yep everynow and then in the old 40 I'd be driving along and nearly hit the roof when I accidently rest my foot on one of those bolts - bloody hot! And in the 80 if you just want fresh air coming thru the vents forget it - may as well have the heater on. I'm bloody glad I'm not alone on this one but!
Scoey!

I have a GQ Diesel and the gearstick for the PTO which comes off the gearbox is too hot too hold more than 2 seconds etc.

Has anyone considered fitting a transmission oil cooler to a manual? They are common place for auto's that tow, but i havent heard of anyone doing this to a manual.

Regards
Rev
