Hi folks....re my 99 Jack 3.0 TD ... dash light says check engine - book says the Engine Management System needs a look at - dealer says "bring it in" - we'll stick it on the machine that goes "ping". Most liikely something like the EGR valve they said - can anyone contribute on what this is - something about exhaust gas recycling.....can this be right ?
If this is the problem , any experience that contributors could share would be appreciated. I believe in being as informed as possible, thereby reducing the chances of a stitch-up.
Thanks........dp

Darian,
It's no good guessing with this stuff!
If the oil ,water and everthing else is OK I would go with the dealer. they have the plug in analylising equipment and should be able to pinpoint the problem.
You can waste a lot of time if problems are'nt obvious and you don't have the correct equipment.

Dave.

Darian, when your "check engine" light comes on, there is obviously a fault somewhere in your system.

When this happens, the onboard computer logs a fault & when the dealer plugs their computer in, it comes up with a specific fault code that tells them exactly what the fault was.

For example, if the vehicle has overheated, the code will tell them that at some stage there has been a problem with the cooling system.

Go to the dealer, get the code read & i'm sure they'll tell you exactly what the problem was/is.

Darian...A common problem that can lead to this on the V6 is a loose fuel filler cap. I know you have a diesel, but give it a quick look.

If it is loose, then the CEL will clear after a while once you have tightened it.

Jackeroos were recalled for a faulty EGR valve in 2000.
