Auto Trans Transfer Case Stuck

Hi Guys,
I have a 93 JM Pajero V6 Auto. Went to select low range on beach - nothing happend - tried again. A rather large clunck sounded and now transfer case lever won't move. Now slipping in first gear when taking off and won't pull up a small
hill. However, once it gets going, its seems ok.
Hoping that someone can give me an idea as to where my problem may lie.
