Patrol GU 4.2 intercooled servicing question

Hi all, Just want to know if the support rails that hold the intercooler need to be removed for general servicing eg tappet adjusting and the like. The support rails being the16mm bars that go from the firewall to the radiator support panel.. Thanks in anticipation.. michael

Hi Michael
From memory I just removed the U shaped hoses on the intercooler, I done the tappets a while ago now, & the wife is away with the car at moment. So I can't go & peek.
The rails & the intercooler stay & the rocker cover will come out quite easy, & dont bother replacing the rocker cover gasket they are quite durable.

PS How have you found your car & the 4.2 We have clocked up 85,000 In just over 2yrs & not 1 problem, no warranty issues just fuel & oil.

My 4.2 TDi has 150,000ks, never had a spanner on it other than basic servicing and 2 1/2 years old. My wife has my first Gu 1999 4.2 td. 350,000ks and the same applies.just remembered that the old one did have the front auto hub covers and mechanisms replaced at 250,000ks, both were cracked. The dealer told me you wont have any trouble with the new ones. Obviously this leads me to think that there were some faulty units around that time. both have been great vehicles. regards Michael

Rails and intercooler can remain in place for doing tappets, just remove pipework on LHS.
