The top of my blue top Optima battery has gone out of shape (wobbly) apparently from heat. The sides seem ok and it is holding power and charging quite ok.
It is approx 12 months old and recharges very quickly. It is in a petrol Patrol and I have been very happy with it until now.
The agent feels the battery is ok and it is not a structual problem, just heat distortion on the top which should not affect performance or service life.
Has anyone had a similar or any problems with an Optima battery?

If the battery has becoem hot enough to distort the plastic you have a serious problem.
Either your charging system is overcharging the battery or the battery is defective.
You really need to find out which it is before your next trip.

I've got a yellow top and no probs so far , but i had a Caterpillar in and the Alternator really cooked it up good, solved the prob;em though in a Landcruiser Troopie 1994 with a heavy duty alternator, i think about 130a/h.
Do you have dash lights flashing after you start up in the mornings at over 2000 rpm.

I have no dash lights flashing or any electrical hassles and the charge rate is correct.

The other reason that the battery can be distorted is because of the heat in the engine compartment, you may need to shield the battery

I've heard nothing good about optimas and heat. They rave about how good they are on their website and when the heat kills them (which it often does) they don't want to know about it. My mate had one in his feroza and at just after 12 months while we were driving in some dunes north of
Perth on a 35c day the car just died. Absolutally nothing, not even any dash lights. I had to jump it and we drive it
home on the alternator.
And because it's over 12 months old, the warranty is completley usless as they will want you to pay half of the replacment price of the new "warranty replacment". Ditch it and get an excide extreme or somthing similar. My mate just went out and we squeased an excide extreme into the feroza (mate it was a tight fit, but it looks rediculously awsome!) and it was cheaper than him replacing the optima under warranty, he's never looked back.
Just my 2c.

I hope people aren't confusing Odyssey and Optima - BOTH are AGM batteries.
The Odyssey is rectangular and the Optima has rounded corners since it uses the Spiral Cell technology.
