Stans truck,
I use a hand held Garmin Etrex and Natmap Raster premium with Ozi explorer software and it all works well on the laptop. You probably need a USB to serial adaptor if it is a fairly new laptop and should get the power/data cables as well to hook them up. Get a car mount for the GPS as well.
The good news is you can buy the lot from the shop on this site for reasonable prices.

Hmm.....Stan......a huge topic - there are three distinct GPS areas as I see it - non-mapping, mapping with hand-helds, mapping via a PC. I'm about to get into my second GPS and will go non-mapping - this can tell me where I am, where I've been (saved trails and waypoints) and how I'm doing it at any time. That'll do me - as I see it, mapping has to be done properly (with the appropriate $ outlays) or not at all - I'll stick with paper maps for what I'll be doing. Re non-mapping, I think the Garmin 60 is good value (maybe the 72 or 76) - power leads and external antennas are available..........try www.gpsoz.com.au for GPS on line (an EOz sponsor).
