Hi Folks
We are planning our trip from Brisbane to Port Douglas, Fraser Island and points in between.
We will be camping with swags, so what sort of weather should we expect?
Thanks
Ray

Ok Ray

That makes it a tad easier ... ;-))

From Brissie to about Rocky should be mild/warm days (16-18 deg) with mild/chilly nights (6-10 deg). Slight chance of rain, but always possible.

With these temps increasing as you go further north. Upwards from about Mackay you won't need your spencer, but take it just in case as you could get the odd cool night.

As David mentions, that is the dry season here, but rain is always a possibility so a tarp or similar may come in handy.

Cheers

Rosco

Yes as Rosco says, it will be cold in the south (well cold for a North Queenslander), and beautiful suny days with coolish nights further north. At Port Douglas tho, things can be wet in June at times. This corresponds to the beginning of the cane crushing season which occassionally is disrupted by June rain that corresponds to a strong high pressure system delivering easterly winds which brings loads of moist air onto the coast from the ocean and results in rain (long maritime fetch as the BOM says)

A small tent or tarp should do you for those few occasions

Over such a large section of coast, I would bank on at least a chance of rain. Brisbane's climate at a given time of year is way different to PD.

I carry a small tent as insurance when travelling with swag

Come on Roscoe, it is "great one day, perfect the next" weather up here.
Just don't mind a little liquid sunshine in summer.
Might be a little wind with it too if there is a cyclone.
More chances of both as you head further north in summer.

Now me, I like travelling north of Rocky after April.

One thing to remember is that what is cold to us up here in Queensland may be slightly different to what is expected is coming from the southern states.
We've already got the doona on the bed. An overnight temperature of 18 is pretty cool up here but if you're from Victoria is what seem pretty warm. Have a look at the BOM site (www.bom.gov.au) and you will be able to find the weather patterns of most of the measuring stations over a fair period of time (some provide weather stats for the last 100 years). The way the rain has been going up here will make it hard to judge. Brisbane has had reasonable rain (not in the dams unfortunately) but further north through the Sunshine coast there has been some good falls. That time of year is normally pretty dry where you're heading. I'd plan for cool to warm days and cool nights. I've always found camping in the swag that it's easy to adjust to the temperature, zip it up if it's cold and open it up if it's hot.
Good luck with it.
