As far as difficulty goes, what is this trip like compared to likes of Cape York & French Line Crossing. I have done both Cape York and Simpson twice. I am wanting to do the Gibb River Road trip & the Kimberleys and I want to get someone elses perspective that has done all these trips. Any hints would be appreciated. Also is it as good as they say it is, as it is a long way.

quick answer......

Yes it is as good as they say......... in fact what I had heard about the region before I went last September did not do justice to the place....... and it is indeed a long way from Canberra.......

Red Rover,
Difficulty-wise it is as difficult as Dalhousie to Mt Dare or Jardine River to Bamaga. It depends when the grader was last through. It is nowhere near as challengeing as the OTL.

It is a beautiful area but at the moment a couple of the gorgrs are closed. Check out "road conditions" on this site.

As far as being a long way, there is always a lot to see on the way.

Red Rover,
I would drive the globe to do GRR again and it's nowhere near as difficult as legend has made it out to be (corrugations aside).
Don't miss Kalumburu & Mitchell Plateau and take an extra spare just in case. Another place that people skip is Old Mornington as it's 100 km's off the track but it's a worthwhile experience also.
I have a lot of gear stored electronically if you're interested but this site and Ron & Viv Moon's Kimberley book will give you a good amount of quality information.
Hope you enjoy the trip

I did it in an XE Falcon sedan in 1981. It was a bit lumpy but not too bad.

XD or XE can't remember anymore but that body shape anyway. It didn't do it a lot of good.

Did GGR last July and when compared to Cape York and SA desert runs my views are- more corrogated then OTL but better than Bypass roads on cape york.(sept 99)
Didnt experience any flats but had to be careful as road surfaces varied enormously, just have to watch rocky sections. rear shockies copped heaps of stone dents.(80 seriesl/c)
Did 13,500 km all up return from ACT didnt use 4wd except to drive out of sand at fitzroy crossing when i took the kids fishing and drove off the causeway.
Roughest bit of road I experienced on trip was Broome to Cape Leveque(deep sandy corrogations).

worse than mitchell falls /kulumburu rds.
