Hello everybody,
Has any one been to Undarra Larva Tubes. Is it worth going there and is it as good as the web site would have me believe? I was thinking about calling in there after Cairns on my around Oz trip which I'm starting in march. I have a new 100 series TD and an Ultimate Camper on the back, and a Zodiac and 25 HP on the roof of the camper. Sounds like fun eh!

Bean,
Looks good to me, I had mixed opinions from people I asked in the past some say it is not worth it and others say it is excellent.
I am going that way in July this year, I guess I will find out for myself.

Bean,

What I mean is off the forum, send me a quick email and we can work out if you are going to be anywhere close to where we are going so we can perhaps organise a camp together one night.

We went there a few years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Do the underground cave trip.

Yes Mr Bean it does sound like fun, lucky bugger. We went to the lava tubes a few years ago and thought it was worthwhile so I'd recommend a visit.

G'day Mister bean,

Hope you're not going to take the mini on that trip :)

IMHO you best take lots of money as its not cheap. From memory a half day trip costs around $90 per person and includes a soggy smorgasbord lunch. But its a grat place.

I think Lawn Hill gorge is a better proposition in that general part of the outback - and it's free.

If you do go, don't actually stop at Undara overnight as the surrounding campsite is like the proverbial "goanna country" - very uninviting.

You would be better off popping up the road to Mt Surprise and stopping at "Joe and Jo's Bedrock Caravan Park".

It is an outback icon in that part of FNQ, and such a friendly and warm place that it is talked about and recommended on the road. Probably one of the friendliest spots you will ever go to in the outback.

You can book in on channel 40 as you get close.

Very popular with people towing off road camper trailers.

Joe is acutually a Savannah Guide, and you can do a round trip to Undara from The Bedrock Caravan Park if you wish.

So my advice [for what it's worth] is if you are coming from Cairns, go straight past the turnoff to Undara and continue on to Mt Surprise and Bedrock.

Book in for a day or two [they have campfire singalongs and group barbies] , have a great time with the happy mob there, and come back on a round trip to the Lava Tubes

You won't be sorry

enjoy the bush

We went there in Sept 02 and yes we thought it was a great spot - we did it on the return trip from Cape York. The camp ground had camp fires, hot showers, laundry, a landscaped pool, sing a longs if you wanted them. Yep it was expensive about $90 for the half day & $130 or so for the full day tour(too long for our 4yr old - we did the half day). Two nights here are enough, but it is worth it. Set amongst Granite boulders - looked similiar to Tbooburra to me. Never been to Mt Surprise - maybe I should have.

book ahead, do the 'bush breakfast' and be sure to do the tour, you will not regret or forget it

I must be the odd one out. stopped overnight at undarra in 1999 on way to cape on reccomendation of a friend who did 1 day bus trip from cairns.. thoughts .expensive, dustbowl/unshaded camping area, ( given Good firepits c/w wood) , 1/2 day tour was boring. see one hole in the ground see them all, had to clamber in and out of the tunnels like a mountain goat. for all the money charged they could put in a few steps and handrails. would recommend instead chilligoe caves
$ 5 bucks a tour , aboriginal guide ,lights, walkways and each cave different.
also great cvp in town with shade and grass.
But to each his own.
regards
Howard

Lots of interesting things to see up our way. You have to go thru Chillagoe to get to Undarra anyway so well worth checking out the limestone caves as opposed to the lava tubes at Undarra. If you like that sort of thing check out the white marble mines at Chillago and the history of some of the huge mines in the area. Elizabeth Gorge is also a beautiful remote camping spot with great fishing and swimming. If you go through Cairns on the way North you can also drop down to Maytown on the way back south, along the old coach trail from Laura on the way home then do Chillagoe via Dimbula. Be sure to stop and say hello on your way thru Cairns
Cheers,
