Now that they are commercially available, we're really looking forward to planting a copse of Wollemi down near the river at Omaroo. I like the story behind the tree - thought to be extinct, found, propagated and saved from extinction. Jenny and I are going to do our bit to propagate a few for posterity.

I've seen the sign outside Tim's nursery at Narellan and Campbelltown advertising them for $49 a tree. Is anyone else going to give it a go?

I'm planning too. But not sure it will like the Brisbane heat and humidity.

Kind regards

My Father in Law got us one, and will look after it till we return home in October, then plant it out on the farm at Captains Flat.

Can get cold, the front gate is 1050m. But thats what wood fires are for, nothing better than sitting in front of the fire at night, after a fine meal and finishing of that bottle of red.

We're only at 950m, but that's still up there. It gets very cold and snows regularly. We love it, and bought it for much the same reason you are where you are: cold, fireplace, good food, red wine, mmmmm.

He's up that end near the fire shed before the black top starts. The hut he has over looks the 6 mile.

So what does Wollemi Pine burn like as firewood??

Did anyone see the prices that the first ones sold at at the auction they had for them? Some people are mad!

Not sure I get your drift Dave, but as for burning in the fire, I guess I will have to wait for a few years yet to find out.

Just a smart remark given that the expensive tree thread got on to the topic of firewood, which when combined = expensive firewood.

The trees at the auction went for thousands.

Yes indeed!!

Anything that can survive 3 ice ages should be safe in my garden;-))

SWMBO & I reserved a couple thru the Australian Geographic offer several months ago... they were delivered last week..
Still in the pots at this stage, 'till we decide where to plant 'em....
(will re-pot 'em soon, & plant 'em out in spring)...

According to the "blurb"....
"Although the Wollemi Pine is one of the most threatened plants on Earth, it is highly versatile and easy to grow. It tolerates heat, cold, full sun AND shade, as well as different types of soils. It is the ultimate survivor, having outlived both the dinosaurs and many of its contemporaries in the plant kingdom"....

Hopefully, large-scale plantings will take care of the "threatened" status...
Indeed, being of the same family as the Hoop, Bunya & Kauri pines, I can see no reason why they couldn't be grown commercially as timber trees....

Confucius say.....
"He who lie underneath automobile with tool in hand,
....Not necessarily mechanic!!"
