Hi all, the latest Dick Smith dogalogue has two UHF radios value packs - a UH012 value pack (includes UH047 1watt handheld) for $318, and another value pack that seems to include a UH088 and a 2 watt hand held for $388. Two questions - is the $388 deal a UH088 unit, and are these good deals? Thanks. Rob.

Greetings
I assume the above does not include an ariel or mounting gear for youre vehicle? A good quality ariel and mounting will add up around $200.00 to your costs. Whilst the uniden site may claim a range of up to 18 kilometres this only occurrs with the right accessories.
A quick Google reveals that GME 3200 UHF CB's are available for a little under $300.00 new.
Low power handhelds (less than 5 watts) are fine for close use such as backing instructions. Use for anything else may disapoint.
Suggest a google for pricing and a browse of the uniden and gme web sites to establish the real value of the "special".
The correct antenna is the key to good performance from a UHF CB. The GME web site explains antenna's
well.
Regards
Paul

Hey Paul, have you ever used a 5 watt prs radio? "...fine for use when backing..."
5 watts is great for convoy communication. I have used them over ten km many times when a convoy is strung out due to numbers and dusty road conditions. With access to a repeater range is of course greatly extended.
Also your comment that an aerial and mount could add up to $200 is rubbish. Less then $50 (at the most!) will get you all you need.
I find the 2 watt hand helds fine for convoy use and my 5 watt fixed unit has a magnetic base aerial sitting inside the vehicle on the rear parcel shelf ! I put there when making a new bar and found that it worked
well so I have left it there.
The 1/4 watt units are a bit under powered, your comments about range do apply to those very low powered units.

Check out ebay, I just got a uniden UH075 5 watt hand held for $334 and normal retail is $420 also you get can get decks, ie UH013 for around the $350 mark, they retail at $490.
AUH012 rrp $299, UH047 rrp $199 for pair.
check out www.uniden.com.au I have checked these prices in shops and there is no difference, I saved heaps buying
mine on ebay, you can get all parts as
well, eg, antennas, mounts, etc.

Hey Robbg,
I've been looking for a UH088sx at the right price and the best I can do is $278 at WOW Sight & Sound. The UH088 is a DIN size radio so if it's going into a standard DIN dash hole then installation is a piece of p*ss! I also have a hand held which if you have a in truck UHF like the UH088 then the hand held is ideal fo0r someone outside the truck to talk you down a tricky
hill or something. You usually pay too much for UHF's on eBay is my experience to btw!
Cheers
Scoey!

Yep, the $388 deal is the UH088 packaged with the handheld UH064. I bought the same package from our local Trax 4x4 accessory store for $380, and if you have a look at Prestige communications, they sell the same package for $369 , see here -
Site Link
They are also selling the UH012 package for $305 (on special, you will see it on the right side of the
home page)
The packages do not come with an antennae or mount.
Cheers
