We have chosen a winner for the website name competition (see Post 32575).

The winner is ' bruce h. (WA) '.

Thks Bruce for your suggestion of " wheretonext.com.au "

Straight fwd - good description of what we're doing (blowing with the wind), easy to spell and remember and gives things a bit of a cheeky laid back feel we thought.

Thks also to everyone that made suggestions.

Much appreciated. All the best

May I suggest that you register it as just "wheretonext.com" rather than ".au".

This way, you can go to one of the cheap US-based website providers (like US$7.00 per month - and $15 for the domain name) and get it all going very cheaply and quickly.

If you decide that you can't do without the ".au" you will most likely need to register it against a company, or at least an ABN and it will cost a LOT more.

I'd check out the provider that I use for www.omaroo.net :

www.dreamhost.com and have a look. They add disk space every month you are with them, and also bandwidth. I'm running a $7.99 per month account and I've now got 1,165 GB bandwidth per month to let people browse on, and 23.5 Gb of disk space. Lots of email accounts and a web-based email interface so that you can use the account on the road anywhere you find an internet-connected computer.

Very easy!

Have fun

Chris

Disagree with your advice Chris purely on the premise of 'Support Australia' If you don't buy locally your are doing the country a disservice.

If everything went offshore then there would be nobody left owning anything in this country which is girt by sea.

I have a domain name with .id.au and it only costs $25 per year. Not necessary to register a dot com domain.

Different web hosts provide different products and there is a plethora of Aussie ISP's to choose from.

Cheers

the guy who hosted our old company website will register it for $39/2yrs and host for $120/yr but there is only 50mb of space - not sure if that will end up being enough.

Bandwidth is the killer here Willem. Australian ISP's are just TOO SKIMPY when it comes to the amount of data they let you serve.

My aussiejeepimages.com site hosts 16,000 images and gets around 2,000 visitors a day, and around 50GTb/mb traffic. In Australia - I just couldn't afford it.

Go Aussie if you have a small site that you don't expect much traffic on.

I am not going to argue the point with you or dispute your claims Chris, but I went in search of your website and it is unavailable. So much for your 2000 visitors a day.

I did see in a further search that you had 8000 images uploaded in 2005. Now you have 16000. Yep you have been busy.

My site is quite big, so I am told, hosting about 150 pages. I get about 1000 visitors a month and around 200,000 hits a year. No where near your total but that's the way the cookie crumbles(an americanism). But I am happy with that and the content rthereof.

Cheers

The sites are both up Willem - don't know why you didn't see them - they're fine!

Where did you see the "8,000" figure? There were 12,000 images there on the site back in September/October 2005 - and that was 6 months ago. YThe site has grown exponentially - so I'm not sure why you question my statement. It was a milestone as discussed here on the ausjeepoffroad forum:

Site Link

I'm all for everything Australian - but I don't wish to be criticised for shopping outside the square when I can't find what I want here. (An "australianism).

Not critising...just an observation. Not questioning your statement just another observation. Obviously you are not uploading stuff to the website but others are. Something akin to Overlander, EO and others.

I had tried www.aussiejeepsimages.com and did not find it but I now see another domain name.

The 8000 figure was from maybe a threasd on Overlander site or EO via Google about Feb 05

Go your hardest.

"Obviously you are not uploading stuff to the website but others are."

Correct... uhmm.. observation ;)

Yes - www.aussiejeepimages.com is a Jeep-only image repository for 257 members around the world. I'm going to do the same soon (on another site) for Land Rover drivers.

Cheers
Chris

as Omaroo said

do you have a company in that name or something, do you, at least have an ABN?

If not you will probably not be able to get the .au.

I'll second Omaroo in recommending Dreamhost

I have both my sites with them and they are very, very good to deal with

www.frasercoast4wdclub.com

www.p7offroad.com.au

(shameless plugs, I know)

Best provider I've come across. I've put lots of friends on to dreamhost.com and they've all had great experiences. The other one I started is www.aussiejeepimages.com

Another shameless plug... but like you, I have no financial interest in Dreamhost - I just find they work very well. Great support too.

Even with an ABN technically to comply with the listing requirements I thought your business name had to be substantially similar to the listing sought for a .au extension.

If not you are at risk of someone later taking the name off you.

I could be wrong but reading the terms and conditions when I listed my .com.au extension I'm pretty sure that was what it said.

I'm pretty sure that's the case Dave. For my last two .au listings (for work) I had to provide an application on relevant company letterhead - proving that the domain name I was applying for WAS part of either my business name, or one of my business's products. The Australian domain name registrar (MelbourneIT) is very strict on this.

I wish you luck Ozdyssey, but I think that you will have to go with a ".com" or ".net" only.
