Hi Guys,
Finally got the cyl head back on the cruiser, its taken far too long........

Now at the point of starting the engine. Initially it ran at the 'as built' ignition setting which gave over 10deg advance at idle (in park). So l've retarded it to somewhere between 3-5deg at idle in neutral. Ran like a pig at 10deg, but is much sweeter at 3deg.

My question is what is the Toyota recommended ign timing and how is it set?
My Max Ellery manual suggests that it should be 3deg at idle in neutral with 'TE1 and E1 of DLC connected). What is TE1, E1 and TLC?? I cant find them in a glossary.

Cheers

BoB.

The 2 pins are in the diagnostic connector on the pass side firewall. If you flip the lid up the underside of the lid has a pin map of the connector layout. use a split pin or similar to bridge the te1 and e1 pins, start engine, check engine light on dash will be on or flashing. this gives an unaltered base timing value and is very important for accurate setting. 3deg is very conservative for low octane fuels, last time i set mine i ran it at 7deg (Using Gas and Premium petrol)

Good luck

Thanks Greg,
I'll have a lookat that tomorrow.

Did you set yours at 7deg as it was best for petrol or for lpg?
As you seem to be tending towards, lpg is a much higher octane than ulp, so cannot be used to set a highly advanced ign without risking detonation when running ulp fuel. Have you experimented with this?

Hi BoB

I have just moved mine (petrol/auto) from 3deg to 7deg as per this LCOOL article. It has made a big difference to low down grunt (less that 2000RPM) and no real difference to fuel consumption.

Bob,

Did a fair bit of experimentation prior to fitting LPG. Had it set at 7deg when i sent it in for LPG fit. the fitters did not change the setting. Generally you can run substantially more advance on LPG due to the fact that it is a slow burning fuel (Compared to petrol,as opposed to coal!!). A mate of mine had same 80 and said his was set on 18Deg!!. Bit ambitious for me but 7deg will be no probs at all as long as you use premium fuel.

The only problem with setting the initial timing on 18deg is you will get something like 45 total this is extremly dangerous as a engine can detonate at high revs without you hearing it .max recommended total timing for a petrol engine is around 34-36 and only 30-32 for a lpg engine but the lpg requires more initial as it creates less energy when it burns thats why you really need the ignition remapped for optimun performance..

Gday
do the joining of the terminals, and you will find your setting is retarded... The computer sets the timing at about 10 at idle, but when you bridge the terminals, it returns to 3. I have had mine set at 6 for a while, and it will run on premium aswell as unleaded. The thing you have to be aware of, is that the computer is programmed to back off the timing, and keep its map concervitive, if pinging occurrs....the motor has two knock sensors, that will detect this before you hear it....The result will be lower power and more fuel consumption from your advanced setting.
So, i recommend 6 if you want to run premium unleaded, or slightly less if you want to run std fuel....When set, take off the bridge and check it again, and you will see it is back up to about 10...this is normal.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the advice.
Currently l've got it set on a gnats nob over the 3deg mark. It is still fantastic compared to before.
It's done about 150km like this, so l will advance it up to 6 or 7deg and try that.
I want to get the lpg set/checked on a dyno, so will finish the advance experiments before l book it in.

Cheers
