Ruth done a couple of quick calculation on my gas consumption.

My two burner Coleman gas stove will burn 200g of gas per burner on FULL. (10000btu burners)
My medium sized Coleman gas light burns 66 g/hour on FULL
A large gas light about 100g/hour on FULL.

I seldom run the cooker or lights on full.

Pat, thanks for that - I have the same Coleman two-burner stove so that gives me an idea - like you, I don't run the stove on FULL either.

Pat, as a qualified gas fitter I was wondering if you could offer some advice as to how to make my GQ use similar amounts of gas per hour :))

So lets say we dont use full but 1/2 to 3/4. Thats around 50g/h for the light and say 150g/h for the cooker.
I'd cook for around an hour ? and the light for 3 hours max in camp. Thats around 200g/night. Roughly, and 1 person only to cook for. That's 4500 grms (full bottle) approx divided by 200grm.
That gives me around 22 days from a 4.5kg cylinder.
Now lets assume that my figures are way wrong, I should get around 11 days minimum out of that bottle.
I must have taken a wrong turn with those figures ! (Although I've never had an empty gas cylinder)
Ok guys, where did I go wrong ?

Oopsies couldnt add ! Red face time ! Its 4500 / 300g not 200g, giving me 15 days not 22. So a week easy in the bush .

You 4.5Kg cylinder is possibly a 4.0 kg one and they probably never take a full fill. Plus you spotted the 300g thingy.

I've always worked on about 5 days, but now I can see why I have a never empty cylinder :))
Very interesting figures, handy for the first timers.

There must be a gas flow meter availiable, or they couldn't charge for gas used. Hmm...probably needs a trailer of its own and costs the national debt :))))))))

My local gas filler charges for a full cylinder no matter how much he puts is. Almost everywhere else is Swap n Go so you end up paying for a full fill anyway. getting hard to find someone who'll weigh the cylinder before and after these days.

Pat,

That's exactly what should be done (weigh cylinder before and after fill. Difference is what you should be charged for) and is done at the hardware store in Tully. I was amazed that someone is still honest enough to only charge for what is used. As you say most just charge a full bottle price, which is highway robbery in my opinion.

Cheers Trevor.

I think we have the same Coleman stove.
That confirms what I have found.
I generally work on 2 weeks of cooking with a 2kg bottle.
That is a brew in the morning, and a meal at night for 2 people, and a brew after dinner, and we use the hot water from the after dinner brew for washing up.
About 45 minutes a day with about 30 minutes on full blow.

Thanks.

Patrolman, if you have the time, wonder if you could help with a query about the Coleman stove.

I want to connect it to a gas bottle with a POL fitting.

The coleman stoves seems to have a special hose with the fitting one end to the stove, and a regulator atthe other end, with a 3/8" bsp fitting.

Can I run a standard hose with POL one end and a 3/8" male bsp fitting the other end. Not sure of the standard hose (2.6 MPa) is rated high enough for the pressure? Might have to put a POL adaptor in there to get the fittings to work.

Thanks for letting me hijack the thread :-)

Not sure OP. LPG isn't my main area tbh I hate the stuff (nasty compared to Nat Gas). You can buy fittings to suit www.gameco.com.au/cat2000/adaptors.htm.

I'll have to do a bit of research. Are you wanting to connect it to a 9kg cylinder??

Hey Brew, we love you two - just having one now whilst doing this.
Footloose, glad you worked out those figures because it was too hard for me but we always use a 9 kg bottle so maybe that's why we never run out - except when we've been camping with long times in between camps and forget which year the bottle was filled! Ha ha ha.

Hi Ruth,

You had better remember to fill it for the 2007 trip..hahahahaha...although I doubt you will need to bring your stove anyway.

Cheers and looking forward to catching up again soon.
