Hi - I have a 1984 4WD Hilux with the 3Y petrol motor. It's a tough old thing but has big problems going up hills on the highway (it has adequate power for 4 wheel driving and around town). I would like to supercharge it - I can buy a 2L Toyota supercharger from my local Jap import place for around $350. Has anyone done this? Was it OK? Can anyone point me to a someone in SA who has expertise in this area who can advise me and who would be able to fit the supercharger (and do up the bottom end if required). Thanks

Are you talking about a turbocharger? If so it will be a pain in the arse to fit and not worth the money.
Do a motor swap to a holden or chev v6 or a 202 or 253 holden if you dont want to spend too much. Or I think a celica motor is an easy one? Anyone will be much better. Try Marks adapters or Dellows or Castlemaine Ropdshop for kits etc.

Modifying an 1984 Hilux with a SuperCharger or Turbo Charger would be a disaster. Have you ever heard the expression "Don't throw good money after bad" , if she goes OK now and she is 22 years old, then leave her to spend her final years gracefeully.! Then when the time comes, take her around the back of the shed and put a bullet in her.! Then spend your hard earned money on something that does what you want.

If the vehicle hasn't lost its integrity I can't see a problem, it doesn't have a useby date.

Hasn't lost it's integrity..?? Gotta love that Ray, she's only got some grey hair at 22 years..! So leave her as she is exactly, that is with her integrity.! Thks Ray,, great choice of words.

I have no idea about the condition of the vehicle, do you ?
Being old doesn't mean it's a wreck.
If it's not full of rust it may be a worthwhile project.

Ray the vehicle is 22 years old. Lets establish that. Supercharging or Turbo Charging an old engine is a recipe for trouble, it's stresses the bottom end and internals and brings on early failures. Therefore it's usuallly asociated with an engine rebuild, a change in compression ratios etc. Theres a lot to consider Ray.! When you look at the big picture and that is 22 years old, you start to question the logic. Sometimes the better option is a later model engine with the turbo already attached and with minmimal change.

Toyota 4Y. very good and quite a free revver, better than 22R in my mind. Both 2.4ltr.

Good luck, sounds like a fun project.

Ooops.
22R 2.4ltr
4Y 2.2ltr but drives better than above with good final ratios.
