hi all here is one for all ute owners with the spare wheel under the tray which has to be removed with 2 pieces of rod joined together to use as a winder.
now my question is there a idea out there that is easier than that or can be left in all the time because it is hard enough during the day but at night that is a whole lot of *^%$%$& involved

Bugger ! Mine's three bits with two dinky little screws, one of which I lost a while ago. Hunted all over the shed before finding a replacement.

I know how you feel.

How often do you have a flat? I had mine under my HJ47 Tray for over 20 years. If we go bush I chuck a second one in the tray. I like it under there and takes 3 minutes to wind it down. Sometimes I think we all get a bit spoiled :-)

cheers

I've had 6 or 7 in remote areas over the past 30 years, 2 on the last trip where the winder was full of stones and a b&tch to get working at night.
However a rear carrier not only introduces more drag and weight etc.
So I've moved from splitz to one piece to hopefully make the tyres easier to fix...the jurys out until the next trip...

For past Landcruisers, I made up a length of steel rod, with a socket welded on one end (so I could hook it up to a 1/2 inch ratchet or drill). And the inner end had a hole drilled and 1/4 inch rod slipped thru. The one piece rod was easier to manouvre and as soon as you "learnt" where the winder was, it was easier.

Not sure of your rig.
My previous hilux,94, had a 1 pce to fit in the slot. Maybe you can install it "permenantly" (for trips). Weld a chain link to it and lock into posi'. Grease lock to keep dirt out, service spare wheel mechanism before trip.

Andy
