Hi,
Would appreciate some feedback on the different fuel systems in Landcruiser troopies - dual gas/petrol versus diesel. We're planning to drive around Oz soon, accessing remote places. We've also found a good 75 series troopie advertised with dual gas/petrol system. The general advice seems to be diesel engines are the way to go, but with climbling diesel costs, would this dual system proove to be a good alternative? Is gas really that hard to come by in the outback? What other specific disadvantages are there for the dual fuel system?
Thanks ahead

I think you answered your own question, "is gas that hard to get in the outback" the short answer is yes.

In most areas away from the larger towns petrol and deisel are about the same price, you just get better range from the deisel.

See if you can get a Troopy with dual tanks, that 180lt of deisel, which could get you 11-1200k.

There is such a thing as diesel/gas. Fairly early days though.

Whatever you end up buying, make sure you fit a Fitch!

It would seem that it can solve all your problems and probably help bring stability to the Middle East and make a dent in world poverty at the same time.

Yes , it may be a decent alternative , depending on where you intend to go.

Here is a website that can give you info on where LPG is available

If you have a decent sized petrol tank, this should overcome gas unavailability.

My dual gas/petrol has a 95 litre petrol tank and I have not run into any problem .

I think if going to Alice Springs via Birdsvlie and Bourke, the last gas is in Bourke the next is Alice, a long way to go on 95ltrs.

Yes I agree , and thats the avenue I'm about to go down with my Patrol.

Couple that with a Jerry or 2 and I dont see gas as being a major issue.

No, plenty of petrol and deisel, but follow the trip planner and you will see how far is is between fills. I hope I don't seem to negative just pointing out the need to carry more petrol and not depend on gas

If petrol tank has enough to cover trip between fills (petrol) run on petrol and keep the gas as reserve.

Yes, you are correct , its about how you manage your gas.

OK, it may mean having to stop a little more often to fill with fuel to conserve your gas until the last minute , but , without really knowing where these people are going to . . .

Hi huns,
As a big fan of lpg I will give you my thoughts. In all honesty a trip like you are planning would be better done in a diesel. Lpg outside the metro area is not cheap at all. I can justify it because i do 500kms a week in the city and save heaps inbetween the trips i do. The diesel would give you the range you wanted without having to carry extra fuel. I run mainly on ulp when in the bush (75lt ulp tank) and coupled with my 115 of gas get a good range, but it takes a lot of planning to make it work as well as carrying jerries. If you were planning to spend long periods in areas with lpg available i would say go the dual fuel, but it sounds like diesel is more suited to your requirements.

Stu,
What's with all the camp ovens in a row?
Cheers.
PS I just put Goodyear muddies on. Like Phil G, i'm very satisfied so far.

The camp oven cook up was for Mr and Mrs Pesty's 50th birthday bash last year at Eurovale. My BFG AT's are wearing well, although i learnt they don't cope well in mud lol. I think the Goodies will be on my shopping list next time too.
