Hi Has anyone out there removed the middle muffler on a prado? I have been told that to remove the middle (BIG) muffler and replace it with a straight pipe will reduce fuel consumption considerably. looking forward to your replies.

find that difficult to believe - who told you and at what cost to pollution emissions is this method ?

Try posting it at the prado's on-line forum at:

and if you get a response put it back here.

Eddie,
I did this sort of thing some years ago with a Falcon when I replaced the original exhaust system with a stainless one (I kept the original diameter). Being a little conscious of cost I got them to leave out a resonator. The missus won't ever let me get a new system again now!!.

Anyway what I noticed (apart from a decent tone) was that fuel use stayed about the same, however, when towing heavy loads up long hills prior to this the temp gauge used to climb significantly - after fitting a less restrictive system it never budged.

That said of course one has to stay within the law. It may be worth talking to some exhaust professionals about your options as the big muffler probably does most of the noise control.
