I was wondering whether anybody has done this at all this year (or last for that matter) and how you found it. We aim to travel the Gunbarrel from west to east from July 7-12 and still awaiting permits. Have heard of at least one other group who have been declined permission to transit this section. Any feedback most appreciated. Anybody else plan to be out there at that time?

We did it last October from the Giles end. The first half is fantastic - great scenery and many stands of desert oak. Second half (warburton side) has been developed into an outback highway - very good 80kph gravel road - to enable access to some of the communities out there.

There are a few conditions for the permit - 3 days max, need HF radio or satphone - must have a least 2 vehicles and no more than 5 (from memory).

I noticed that reference to this road has been removed from the DIA permits section.

And regarding the permits, best to phone up and speak to them about it.

Thanks Phil. Plenty of places to camp? Any good suggestions/GPS points etc? Did you see many other vehicles on the section?

Cheers

Any further detail on which part of the Gunbarrel you are talking about? there are several areas of the Gunbarrler now renamed or noted as "abandoned"
You can be 99% sure that the "pitlands" Anangu Pitjantatjara lands in Northern SA will not give you a permit. However, on the NT side, this is Central Lands Council and they are more cooperative.

Just referring to the section from Jackie Junction east to the intersection with the Great Central Road near Warakurna. As far as I know this is all under the control of the Ngaanyatjarra Council.

Coyote, as clay said - all in WA, not in AP Lands.

Clay, buggered if I could spell "Ngaanyatjarra Council" :-)) I phoned their office in Alice Springs, and my permit was eventually faxed back the day before we left. they send the request out to the community for approval.

Camp spots - unfortunately, I didn't mark our camp, but be assurred that there are plenty of good places amongst the desert oaks between Mippultjarra Junction and Giles (see hema map). West of Mippultjarra junction is where the flash road starts - the country there is more open, and less appealing. Also at that junction the community has constructed a rainwater tank.

Thanks Phil. Here's hoping for the permit and I will also give them a call if nothing comes through shortly. We have done a lot of work in the Kimberley in Indigenous Health so hopefully they will give us a sympathetic hearing if it comes to that.

Cheers
