Around $50- will buy you a copy of "Camps Australia 3" and it is great for advising about all manner of camp sites, both free and with fees. It shows what facilities are available.
I think the book is available from the Exploroz shop too.
Cheers and have a good trip.

Thanks Roachie,
Looks like the book is available at $46 from the book shop. We will be in your neck of the woods to have a look around befor heading up the center and across to Cairns. Any idea on the average caravan park charges per nite ?

Nuboy, if you go to www.around-oz.com/ follow the links you may find some good free camps & some not so free.c'van park at Narrabri is reasonable next to the council swim pool. most non tourist type parks are reasonable $18-$25 p/night. Have good trip, Bob.

Nuboy,
The cost of caravan parks varies greatly and also is affected by the number of people (ie: do you have kids?). The biggest rip-off I've seen is several years ago when the Woomera c/van park hit me up for $45- for 1 night in an unpowered gravel site. However, on reflection, you have to be prepared to cough up some times. We would normally have just bush camped (we mostly just pull-up a klick or so off the highway or track and set-up a camp for ourselves, but on that occasion we were part of a 4WD Club trip which included a tour of the rocket range and Nurrunga etc, so we had to go with the flow).

we traveled through SA,VIC and NSW during January.
We paid anywhere from $15 a night (Crystal Brook SA) to $58 a night White Ibis (NSW, just out of Canberra ) per night. This was for powered sites with 4 kids.quite often the younger kids were free.

If you're going to buy the Camps Australia book I recommend buying the Snapshot supplement as well. It provides photos of many of the free camp sites. Also visit their website and download the updates as there are many changes to the book already.
There is a caravanning/camping forum at www.camping.com.au/ which has some advice on free camping. Most of the info is located in the Forum section. Any of the caravanning websites generally offer advice on free camps.
