We are thinking that we might need something more powerful than our 2 year old 3 litre Challenger to pull our new 18' van.

In our area of Northern Queensland there are large numbers of diesel Toyota 4x4 Landcrusers (white mainly) and a year-old model which we have done a couple of trips in recently has comfort and performance similar to our ulp 3l challenger. (Diesel cost here is round $1.45 and ULP $1.35 ). The initial purchase price of the Landcruser is significantly higher than the Challenger , however what concerns us is the long term running costs of the deisel Landcruser.

Could anyone with a recent model Landcruiser tell us how much the cost of diesel per km we could expect to pay.

Turist,
Average fuel consumption for my 79series Landcruiser over 75000k is 14.5l/100k which at your fuel price of $1.45 comes to .21c/k.Towing my 4.8m boat consumption is usually around 16l/100k and non towing light use sitting on around 100k/hr is 13.5l/100k.Hope this is of some help.
Cheers Tony

Diesel would have to be better for heavy towing than ULP, especially in the fuel consumption stakes after you hook the van up.

80 series turbo diesel auto , at current diesel price in Brisvegas ,$1.35 ,, my fuel cost per klm = 15.5c or in other words 8.7 klm per lt / 24miles to the gallon ,, towing camper trailer. Couple of thing to consider is resale value and fuel price stabillity , ulp is up and down like a yoyo where as diesel sits reasonably constant in relation to ulp ,, if your going to tow go the diesel.
