I have an 80series Landcruiser. It very rarely goes off the bitumen and it is mainly used to tow a caravan.
I do not want to go to the expence of having it converted to part time four wheel drive but had considered removing the front drive shaft and fitting a pair of free wheeling hubs to the front axel. Any oppinions on this idea?

Just leave it as it is... A lot safer to tow with a full time 4wd. It would also be a bit embarrasing if you got bogged and the front driveshaft was sitting in the shed at
home!

I agree..... why not just leavie it the way it is. One day you might want to sell it and then you'll have to put it together again.....

Why do you want to change to part time 4WD?

Any fuel saved (which I doubt very much having run cruisers in H4 on dirt roads for thousands of k's) would take years to recoup the money spent to change it to two wheel drive.
The drivetrain is engineered to be used in constant 4wd not 2wd.

a mate forked out $550 for the marks adaptors kit to convert to part time- you may be better off going down that path.
