OK did anyone watch Discover on Chanel 7 on Saturday night? Apparently there is a new 4X4 track opened about 30 Mins out of Adelaide, did not get to catch the show so if anyone has some more info on it I am all ears.

You could try checking your local Ch 7 website for the story and details.

Didnt see it but I'm guessing it would be Saunders Gorge. I reckon we'll have a look one day and spend a night there.

That depends I suppose. They do seem a little starved for decent 4wd country over there. Maybe that's why there's always so many of them in the High Country.

Had to laugh at one of the flyers for Skytrek when I was at Wilpena. One thing they hailed as it's claim to fame was the ability to access the highest point of Sth Aus accessible by 4wd - Mt Cavanagh or something like that at about 800m ASL - for a fee.

The highest point accessible by 4wd in Vic's Alpine NP is supposed to be the summit of Pinibar at 1781m, and it's free! And the ride can be a bit exciting even if it's damp. I wouldn't tackle it if it's wet. (Dry Weather Only Tk anyway)

We did enjoy Arkaba Station's 4wd (self guided) tour but I didn't find anything like back home.

Of course we don't have anything like the Sth Australian Outback over here, or Googs Track, and depending on which surveyer you believe then even the Border Track is on their side of the fence. So pros and cons for both.

But I really hope the pay per use 4wd industry that has sprung up over there never gets of the ground here - with so much of our track on public land there's probably not the incentive to try it.

Hey Dave,

Might be plenty of Crow Eaters over in the High Country, but have you ever been down Robe, Cununda area on a long weekend. South Ozzies play spot the Crow Eater, its wall to wall victorians, seems you aren't allowed to drive on many beaches south of the border.

Guess each state has its highlights and lowlights. Only one thing for it, have a look at them all... :-)

Geocacher,
Of course there isn't anything like the Flinders in Vic. They were once higher than the Himalayas, nothing that impressive is east of the border. Some of the oldest fossils in the world are found here. Geologists from all over the world come to study the Flinders.

This new track seems like it might appeal to the city slickers who want a thrill from their new rav4 or territory.

You are right there Barnesy.

Looked like the farm driveway in the pictures with a few shortcuts over some small hills. Oh well. As you say those who know not what they are missing might enjoy it.

Maybe some of them will get the bug and become voting real 4wd owners. Can't be all bad.

As for Robe, I haven't done that yet. We were going early this year but those going couldn't get a common bit of time off on the roster so we had to postpone it. The Flinders Ranges must have been fairly spectacular a few million years ago. I'm guessing there are few Sth Aussies who wish they still had some of their old altitude, then they mightn't have to drive all the way to Victoria in the winter to ski and all the way back in the summer to go 4wding ;o)

As for this Victorian we will be back outback in Sth Australia soon, not next week though as we'll be in Broken Hill & Mungo - gotta give SA a rest, or they might start stopping me at the border - the Magpies sticker upsets the sensitive ones that barrack used to barrack for the wrong Magpies.

Ok Dave u have a fish................The reason we have to pay for a few tracks is that is on private property.
Anyway you may have the high country but a vast majority of your population have to live in slummy ol melbourne :))) Worth the drive from here when u compare it :-).

Gee there I was worrying I was using the wrong bait.

I hope they're biting better at Dartmouth over the next few days.

I realise they are private tracks Brew. Guess you have to take what you can get, and I'd reckon the property owner pays half of it out in liability insurance (which is probably also why none that I've tried have been particularly challenging.)

I have the good sense not to live in Melbourne. Tried it, hated it and left.

Many have seen the same light over recent years and many rural centres are growing.

I've seen a few spots I'd live in SA but given that most places I'd live they don't pay their ambos over there I guess I'll be staying here.

Adelaideans dont have to go far to utilise their 4WD's - most of their roads (Sth Road particularly) are little more than goat tracks anyway.

Gee,

There's are heap of rules to take on board. I like the bit about straying off the "beaten" track.

"Any off track driving will incur a $200 fine per incident......."

So what, they got closed circuit TV, or does Big Brother follow you everywhere you go.

And what about this one:- "Maximum of 4 children per adult"
Does that mean that a couple could have 8 kids hanging around them?
That sounds relaxing:-)

Doesn't appeal to me.

Yes the 4wd track shown on 7's Discover was at Saunders Gorge Sanctuary.
I am the property owner and here is a brief description about the track called the Eagle View 4WD Trail. This is a private sheep grazing property that is being converted to a private conservation area. The property has been open to the public for 16 years with B&B Accommodation and walking trails. In the past we operated tours of the property in our own 4WD. After many years of requests we have now mapped out and built a track that loops through the property. This is to give people access to the scenery in their own 4WD. It is not a wild and rugged track more a scenic drive over some steep, rough and rocky hills. Track fees are charged to help fund our ongoing conservation work and maintain the track. Most of the people that have now driven the track have used it as a social day out. A couple of friends, picnic lunch and a bit of a workout for the 4x4 and all in just over an hour from Adelaide. We are not trying to compete or compare with the outback tracks but with rising fuel prices we are offering a 4WD experience without having to travel the long distances. We hope that people will enjoy the drive and won't abuse the property.
