Gazza
Folks,
I'm leading a
Cape York trip later in the year (July) and we intend to have a 3 day stopover in
Cairns both on the way up and on the way back to allow for any servicing and necessary repairs to the vehicles to be done. Can anybody recommend a reputable 4WD specialist in the area that can be trusted to "get it right". I have two in
Canberra that I trust but I am loath to just look up the phone book for such an important issue.

Hi Gazza, I’m sure you’ll get some referrals for a mechanic in
Cairns...but I have to tell you about Ray at
Cape York Tyres and Auto Centre in
Cooktown. Ray, his wife Katrina and their team just blew us away with their service, attitude and quality of workmanship ( this was a couple of years ago). He proved to be an excellent mechanic and fixed a few things that many others had tried…but most importantly he was professional, very reasonably priced and he actually cares! So if you need any work done etc in
Cooktown give Ray a call on 07 4069 5233.
Have a great trip
Cheers
Alex

We lived in
Cairns for a while some time ago. Try
Cape York Automotive in Federation St,
Cairns (4051 3360), they did some mechanical work on an '84 troopie for us and we've been along the
Gibb River Rd to
Kalumburu twice since then with no problems. Don't know what the company's like now though. We got brake work done at Midas (Water St, near the big Myer building in the centre of town, 4031 6000), they did an excellent job and were very professional - again four years ago so it may be different now.
